Software Engineering (Cloud & DevOps) - Manager

The Africa Assurance Innovation and Digital team is looking to appoint an experienced Manager – Software Engineering with strong full-stack engineering, Azure cloud, and DevOps capability. The role will lead the design and delivery of secure, scalable, cloud-native solutions for the Assurance business, combining modern application development with practical experience in Azure infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, automated deployment, systems integration, and the Microsoft Power Platform.

This role requires strong software architecture and engineering judgement, together with the ability to manage solutions across development, test, and production environments. The successful candidate will guide technical design decisions, embed secure and repeatable delivery practices, collaborate across business and technology teams, mentor developers, and identify opportunities to modernise platforms, improve productivity, and reduce operational and business risk.

Other responsibilities include:

• Architect and implement scalable, secure, and cloud-native software solutions aligned with business needs and enterprise architecture standards.
• Design, build, and manage Azure services and infrastructure, including App Services, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Key Vault, Azure SQL, and related platform capabilities.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform to enable consistent, repeatable, and controlled deployments across environments.
• Configure and maintain CI/CD pipelines, such as GitHub Actions, to automate build, testing, deployment, and release processes.
• Develop modern web applications using React, JavaScript or TypeScript, and relevant backend technologies and frameworks.
• Design, build, secure, and consume REST APIs to integrate Microsoft 365, Azure services, Microsoft Graph, SharePoint, Dataverse, and external platforms.
• Build, maintain, and enhance applications using Microsoft Power Apps and workflow automation solutions using Power Automate or equivalent tools.
• Manage Azure environments across development, test, and production stages, ensuring stability, scalability, resilience, and operational continuity.
• Manage solution identity and access, including Microsoft Entra ID, app registrations, service principals, managed identities, and role-based access control.
• Apply governance, security, and risk management standards, including least-privilege access, secure secret management through Azure Key Vault, and appropriate technical controls.
• Upgrade and refactor legacy systems, recommending modernisation strategies aligned with cloud-native architecture and business priorities.
• Conduct in-depth testing, debugging, monitoring, and performance optimisation to deliver robust and resilient solutions.
• Produce comprehensive technical, architectural, operational, and process documentation to support sustainability, auditability, and knowledge transfer.
• Write clean, efficient, secure, and maintainable code based on business and technical requirements.
• Collaborate with Business Analysts, Product Owners, architects, security stakeholders, and development teams to deliver high-quality solutions aligned with strategic objectives.
• Lead technical discussions, solution design decisions, architecture reviews, deployment support, and resolution of post-implementation issues.
• Mentor junior and senior developers, support team-level problem solving, and contribute to capability building and continuous improvement.

To qualify for the role, you must have:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
• At least five years’ relevant software development experience, including responsibility for technical design, delivery, or team leadership.
• Strong full-stack development experience using modern languages and frameworks such as C#, .NET, JavaScript or TypeScript, React, Python, HTML, CSS, and Git.
• Practical experience designing, deploying, and supporting solutions on Microsoft Azure, including services such as App Services, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Key Vault, and Azure SQL.
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform, and environment configuration across development, test, and production.
• Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or an equivalent platform.
• Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and integrating with Microsoft Graph, SharePoint, Dataverse, Microsoft 365, Azure services, or external platforms.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, app registrations, service principals, managed identities, RBAC, and secure secrets management.
• Experience developing workflow or automation solutions using Power Apps, Power Automate, or comparable technologies.
• Strong knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, software design, testing, Agile delivery, and the software development life cycle.
• Experience applying cloud security, governance, least-privilege access, monitoring, and operational support practices.
• Demonstrated experience leading technical discussions, reviewing solution designs or code, mentoring developers, and supporting delivery teams.
• Exposure to data analytics, Power BI, Machine Learning, or Artificial Intelligence will be advantageous.
• Relevant Microsoft Azure or DevOps certifications, such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Administrator Associate, or DevOps Engineer Expert, will be advantageous.
