About the job

Energytech Cypher exists to use technology to accelerate clean energy commercialization by using technology to connect innovators, investors, and strategic buyers by giving them the insight they need to find and build meaningful commercial relationships. We do this by facilitating authentic connections, providing critical resources, and providing organizational development; this is enabled by leveraging modern AI and proprietary data sets.

Energytech Cypher is hiring its first full-time technical leader. This person owns the architecture, engineering practice, and technical direction of our platform as we scale from early customer deployments to a production system serving the energy and industrial sector.

In addition to strategy, this is a hands-on building. The CTO is the functional Head of Engineering: hands on the keyboard (with Claude Code), in architecture reviews, and deploying to production - working as the direct counterpart to our Head of Product. We are looking for someone who has run a small, high-output engineering team (3-6), has recently written and reviewed production code, and is ready to take on additional scope as the company grows.

Core Responsibilities
1. Platform Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Architecture Ownership: Defining how the platform must function over the next two to five years, and making the trade-off decisions as we service our stakeholders
  • Infrastructure & Data Decisions: Owning cloud and database strategy and deployment implementation with a clear view of cost, operational burden, and scaling behavior. You should be able to tell us what our infrastructure looks like as we grow our customer base an order of magnitude
  • Technical Judgment: Bringing lived operating experience to decisions currently made on best-available industry practices. 2. Engineering Team Leadership & Operations
  • Hands-On Engineering: Writing code, reviewing pull requests, and working directly alongside the engineering and coding teams.
  • Engineering Operations: Establishing platform and engineering best practices - environments, release process, testing, observability, incident response - and knowing what to do when things break.
  • Team Development: Assessing the skill gaps on our current engineering team and building a deliberate plan to close them. Growing early-career developers into stronger ones is a core part of this role. Hiring and building a team and facilitating a strong performance culture.
    3. Cross-Functional Partnership & Communication
  • Product Partnership: Serving as the technical counterpart to our Head of Product - answering the engineering questions that shape product decisions, and reflect on the state of the art for agentic interaction in product design.
  • Stakeholder Influence: Explaining technical direction and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders - executives, investors, customers, and partners - and building alignment around them.
  • Customer-Facing Engagement: Participating directly in technical discussions with enterprise and industrial customers during evaluation, integration, and deployment. 4. AI-Enabled Product Development
  • Applied AI Direction: Setting the strategy for how AI and large language models are used inside our platform and inside our own engineering workflow.
  • Tooling & Technique: Maintaining active, current fluency with AI platforms, prompting approaches, and evaluation methods, with a bias toward measurably better output rather than novelty.
