Cardinal Engineering is currently seeking a Hull system engineer to provide structural/naval architecture support the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Engineering Team (CET) within the Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Maritime organization.

Successful candidates will participate in the Hull Group in the CET reporting to the Hull Systems Engineering Manager (SEM), supporting the New Construction and In-Service Aircraft Carrier Ship Design Managers (SDMs) and their Deputies in solving challenging problems related to aircraft carriers ship structure. Successful candidates will coordinate with Engineering Agents, Technical Authorities, TYCOM, Program Offices, SUPSHIP Newport News, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Ship Repair Facility (SRF), and other activities to resolve technical matters.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support and assess risk for technical decisions for SDMs and the Hull SEM.
  • Coordinate ship system design requirements, specification variations, and/or design waivers.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports detailing testing results, engineering conclusions, and structural findings.
  • Recommend and implement design modifications based on data-driven engineering conclusions.
  • Identify and apply regulatory, commercial, military (DoD), and classification society rules to all ship designs and modifications.
  • Interface with vendors, contractors, and cross-functional teams to ensure necessary engineering resources are available for ships and systems.
  • Provide technical assessments and evaluations in accordance with ship specifications and advise on equipment or system issues.
  • Apply strict requirements pertaining to coatings, welding, strength of materials, shock, arrangements, and damage control to major Navy program assignments.
  • Develop complex design specifications for ships scheduled for alteration, repair, rebuilding, conversion, modernization, or rehabilitation.

Engineering degree with 10+ years of experience is required. Experience with a shipyard, Naval Surface/Undersea Warfare Center (NSWC/NUWC), Supervisor of Shipbuilding Command (SUPSHIP), Regional Maintenance Center (RMC), Type Commander (TYCOM), or similar organizations supporting construction, operation, maintenance, modernization, and/or repair of ship structure is required. Candidate should have excellent technical writing and communication skills. Ideal candidate has experience working with NAVSEA and aircraft carriers. Experience must be with one or more of the following areas of hull structures:

· Hull accesses and structure

· Superstructure and masts

· Tanks and voids

· Damage control systems

· General arrangements

· Outfitting

· Preservation and corrosion control

· Welding and non-destructive test (NDT)

· Weights and stability

· Shock hardening

Candidates will be based on-site at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. with part-time telework. Occasional travel will be required in execution of assigned duties. Must be a US Citizen and currently possess a SECRET security clearance.

Salary commensurate with years and applicability of experience ranging from $120 – $130K.
