About the Role:

The R&D organization is looking for a strong, senior engineering manager to lead development of our SmartProcedures(TM) product suite and help us expand into adjacent product areas. These product capabilities are vital to support our Environmental, Health, and Safety minded customers in several industries throughout the world, including energy.

You will be instrumental in hiring, retention, and future growth of the team. You will work cross-functionally with your peers in the organization: engineering management, product management working group, quality engineering, sales, product support, and others.

ATR is a remote first company, and we are looking for exceptional candidates who know how to build positive relationships in a remote environment and get work done. The R&D team is spread across the greater Houston area, western Montana, and Colorado. You must bring excellent verbal and written communication skills to lead your engineers and partner with cross-functional teams across the company.

What You’ll Do:

This position will be reporting to the CTO and responsible for leading and inspiring a team of about a dozen software engineers, including both full-time employees and contractors. This includes:

• Prioritizing work and managing team workload, project resourcing & coordination, including saying “no” and “not yet” when appropriate
• Keeping the team on track and finding ways to adjust when surprises happen
• Detailed participation in code and design reviews, providing technical guidance and feedback to team members.
• You will Influence product architecture when required.
• Gathering and communicating status about how and what the team is doing
• Communicating and coordinating with other teams, from individual contributors to executives
• Triaging customer support and user tickets and building a relationship with those teams
• Collaborating with the CTO, senior engineers, and product management to help shape our product roadmap and technical strategy
• Balancing concrete and immediate use cases with longer term technical strategy
• Coaching engineers and guiding their career growth via frequent feedback
• Hiring, interviewing, and occasionally sourcing candidates
• Help drive our annual hackathons, inspire team creativity, and build a culture of innovation.

Engineering managers at ATR are hands-on technical leaders. We don’t expect Engineering Managers to write code on the critical path to shipping features (you likely will not have time), but you will need to be able to make sense of the team’s PRs and designs. You'll need to develop in-depth knowledge of our system architecture, data flows, APIs, test processes, and dependencies, so that you can reason over your team's work, understand and explain its impact on other teams, and to assist in troubleshooting.

In your first 3 - 6 months, you will be expected to:

• Build strong relationships with the engineering, product, support, customer success, and leadership teams.
• Establish a clear understanding of the SmartProcedures architecture, development processes, and technical priorities.
• Improve engineering execution, prioritization, and delivery predictability. You'll have implemented a few quick wins and defined a longer term plan you can deliver on.
• Develop and retain a high-performing engineering team.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity through automation and Generative AI.
• Help establish and execute a longer-term technical roadmap for the product and its evolution toward a scalable, cloud-native SaaS platform.

What You’ll Need:

• Prior experience as a manager of multiple, small software development teams (2-4 people per team), coupled with prior experience as a software developer.
• Be informed and have practical experience applying Generative AI to improve the SDLC and achieve business goals, not simply applying technology for its own sake.
• A strong sense of ownership. Your team owns the code and the future of these components.
• Customer obsession. You recognize that your products have to solve real customer problems. If they are not, you are empowered to help fix them.
• Solid design and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated passion for engineering excellence, quality, security, and performance, coupled with a desire to ship elegant solutions to complex problems.
• Strong cross-group collaboration and interpersonal communication skills working with a variety of roles including engineering, product management, support, and sales engineering.
• Demonstrated track record of mentoring and coaching engineers.
• Experience working with remote teams while maintaining cohesion and execution velocity.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across the organization, from executive staff to engineers.
• Previous software engineer experience working in C++, C#, Blazor, and DotNET Core on Windows, or React/Typescript/Node.js on Linux.
• BS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent.
• 10+ years of professional experience.

Bonus Points:

• Familiarity replatforming a monolith to a cloud native, multi-tenant, distributed architecture on Azure Kubernetes Service.
