About the job
Position Summary
Relatable’s item master is the spine of the business. Every SKU we create flows into pricing, retailer setup, freight and container planning, demand planning, and financial reporting, and every error in it resurfaces later as a retailer chargeback, a broken forecast, or a margin miss. The Product Data Specialist owns that spine.
This is a hands-on execution role. In year one you will personally run domestic and international item creation end to end. Over the same period you will document that process to a standard that allows routine transcription work to move to a dedicated offshore team, and then lead that team, shifting your own time from doing the work to setting the rules, controlling quality, and automating what should never have been manual in the first place. This transition could also include certain Data eventually moving into a PLM/PIM as well as the offshore build out and transition with you building gates and owning accuracy before anything goes live.
We are a multi-brand consumer products company producing games, plush and toys and selling through mass retail, e-commerce and DTC, and growing partly through acquisition. That means new SKUs, new brands, new channels and new countries land constantly. This role is how we keep up without breaking.
What You’ll Own
Item Creation & Maintenance: Domestic
- Intake and triage requests from Brand, Product Development and Sales; confirm each request is complete and correctly scoped before work begins.
- Create SKUs per the Standard and Non-Standard Configuration SKU Assignment Charts, applying judgment where a configuration falls outside the standard.
- Create UPCs and case GTINs in GS1; export barcode files, rename to the SKU / ITEM NAME / UPC convention, and file to the designated Egnyte library.
- Build and validate the NetSuite item record: product type, item number, UPC, display name, brand type, master carton GTIN and inner carton GTIN.
- Submit to Brand in NetSuite and confirm back to the requester with SKU, item name and UPC.
- Maintain item names and attributes on request, with a controlled change trail.
Item Creation & Maintenance: International
- Derive international SKUs from the domestic parent using the country-code suffix standard, including the full exception set (UK not GB, SP not ES, GE not DE, EF for Canada English-French, CA for Canada French, L8 for eight-language EU items).
- Create international UPCs and case GTINs in GS1; export, rename and file barcode assets to the designated Egnyte structure.
- Build and validate NetSuite bulk upload templates from domestic parent data, and coordinate validation and load.
- Own the mapping between domestic parents and their international children so the relationship is queryable in the system rather than held informally.
Retailer & Channel Syndication
- Populate and maintain item data in retailer and marketplace systems — Walmart Item 360, Target Partners Online, Amazon catalog and flat files, Costco, TikTok Shop, Shopify and distributor portals.
- Manage GDSN / 1WorldSync publication; resolve sync failures and attribute rejections.
- Support retailer onboarding, new-item setup windows, promotional setup and assortment changes.
- Investigate and resolve item, pricing and operational discrepancies raised by retail and distributor partners.
Packaging, Logistics & Compliance Attributes
- Own packaging and logistics data unit and case dimensions, weights, case pack, inner pack, TI/HI, cube and pallet configuration. These are the inputs to freight quoting, container planning and landed cost, and they have to be right. Revalidate item data at the prototype-to-production handoff including dimensions, weight and below compliance attributes to ensure that data entered early in development is re-checked and updated before commercial shipment for system accuracy.
- Maintain compliance attributes: country of origin, HTS classification, CPSIA/CPC status, age grading, warning and labelling requirements, battery and lithium flags.
- Gate release: no item goes live for commercial use with incomplete attributes.
Data Governance & Quality
- Own the item master data dictionary, required-field standards and naming conventions as controlled documents: including the SKU Assignment Charts themselves.
- Define and maintain the single source of truth for item data which is Netsuite Today and Netsuite plus a PLM/PIM in the future state. Partner leadership to define which system will be authoritative across needs and attributes and how conflicts between systems will be resolved.
- Own the item and associated identifier hierarchy companywide including UPC, Ean, GTIN 12,13 and 14 including what identifier applies at each packaging level (inner, master case, pallet etc.) and serve as the authoritative voice ensuring the teams have this right for all our customers.
- Audit the existing item master data and run recurring quality checks for duplicates, orphaned and incomplete records, and attribute drift between NetSuite and downstream channels. Run a remedy plan to bring legacy records to current data standards.
- Publish a monthly data quality scorecard: completeness, error rate by source, and cycle time from request to live SKU.
- Design and simplify the SKU naming convention and architecture across brands and product lines with right cross-functional leaders to then create and enforce a standard everyone can follow.
- Own item lifecycle: activation, discontinuation, replacement SKU mapping and end-of-life hygiene.
Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Log every manual touch and maintain the backlog of what should be eliminated rather than relocated.
- Partner with IT and NetSuite administration on CSV imports, saved searches, SuiteScript automation, GS1 API integration and retailer feed automation.
- Support system testing, UAT and data migration for platform changes.
New Brand & Acquisition Integration
- Map acquired brand catalogues into the Relatable item master — SKU structure, GTIN ownership, attribute mapping and historical data conversion.
- Stand up new brands across retailer and channel systems.
Qualifications
- 5-8 years in product or item master data, retail operations, supply chain or data operations.
- Hands-on ERP item master experience; NetSuite strongly preferred.
- Strong coachable knowledge of GS1 standards: GTIN structure, UPC assignment, GDSN and where each applies across various packaging levels in alignment with retailer requirements.
- Direct experience with at least one major retailer item setup portal (Walmart, Target, Amazon, Costco).
- Advanced Excel: lookups, large-file validation, bulk templates. SQL or scripting a plus.
- Demonstrated experience writing process documentation that other people actually follow and the ability to set and enforce data standards across teams that do not report into you.
- Experience directing or quality-checking offshore or outsourced teams strongly preferred.
- Vendor management experience
- Exceptional attention to detail, and the temperament to care about a single wrong digit.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Information Systems or a related field preferred.
How We’ll Measure Success
- Item setup cycle time: request received to live SKU.
- First-pass accuracy on new item records.
- Retailer item-setup rejections and data-driven chargebacks.
- Attribute completeness across the active catalogue.
- Share of item creation volume executed offshore at or above the New York quality baseline.
- Manual touches eliminated.
