Role Overview

You would write the software that makes Mazlite's sensors work: the cloud services behind them, the interfaces people use to read them, the computer vision and machine learning applied to the data they produce, and the integration with the PLCs and industrial controllers they sit beside. It is the uncommon software job where the thing you ship ends up running on a factory floor.

This is a hybrid technical leadership role. You would own projects end to end, shape the architecture, and mentor the developers around you, reporting directly to Mazlite's co-founder and CTO.

The salary band is published below, along with four weeks of vacation from your first year and a yearly equity award in the company share ownership plan.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end development of software projects, from design to deployment
• Architect and build scalable systems across cloud, front-end, and backend environments
• Contribute to industrial automation solutions, including PLC-integrated systems
• Optimize components related to computer vision, machine learning, data processing, data transfer, and other critical pipelines
• Develop and drive comprehensive testing and quality control strategies and systems
• Mentor and support junior developers through code reviews, guidance, and best practices
• Manage project timelines, priorities, and technical direction
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and stakeholders
• Ensure security, reliability, and performance across all systems
• Help define and maintain development standards and system architecture

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• Strong understanding of software architecture and system design
• Experience across several of these:
  • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar)
  • Front-end frameworks (Angular, React, or similar)
  • Backend languages (C++, Python, Rust, or similar)
  • Deployment pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Containerization (Docker, or similar)
  • Linux-based operating systems
• Experience with performance tuning, memory management, or optimizing high-throughput systems
• Solid grasp of security principles and best practices
• Experience mentoring or leading other developers
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
• Canadian citizenship or permanent residency (see "Why this role requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residency" below)

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with industrial automation, PLC systems, and robot programming
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (OPC UA, MQTT, MODBUS, etc.)
• Experience integrating software with hardware or industrial systems, such as industrial cameras or custom circuitry
• Experience developing and deploying machine learning models
• Knowledge of networking, embedded systems, or IoT
• Background in high-reliability or real-time systems
• An existing Government of Canada security clearance, or having held one

Work Environment

• Hybrid role based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
• Mix of remote work and on-site collaboration depending on project needs

Why this role requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residency

This is a bona fide occupational requirement for this role, not a preference. Two things drive it: part of the work is carried out under an NRC IRAP grant, whose terms set this condition, and part of it is performed under security clearance for United States Department of War and Canadian military programs, which cannot be granted to someone who is not eligible to hold that clearance.

Compensation and Benefits

• CAD 130,000 to 140,000 a year
• A yearly equity award in the company employee share ownership plan (ESOP)
