About the job

1099 Consultant | Client-Facing | Immediate Start

We are looking for an analyst who can hold the room and write the document that comes out of it. In this role, you run client discovery, turn it into requirements, process and data models, personas and journeys, then stay through quality assurance, adoption, and the change management that makes the new way stick.

Why This Role
We build business systems for executives at mid-market companies. The work runs across industries and across the executive team, reaching the CEO, COO, CFO, and CRO, through three practices: fractional CFO leadership, AI enablement, and revenue engineering. This is a client-facing analyst seat, not an in-house one. Former consultants are encouraged to apply; the habits carry over directly.

What You'd Own

Client discovery and requirements gathering: lead stakeholder workshops and interviews, turn ambiguous client requests into Functional Requirement Documents and System Requirement Specifications, map current-state processes and design the target-state workflow
Solution design and architecture alignment: evaluate platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot, and SAP against client requirements, produce user stories and acceptance criteria, run gap analysis separating standard platform capability from custom development
Data and process modeling: design data flow diagrams, entity relationship models, and system integration workflows, audit current data structures and set migration, mapping, and governance strategy
Personas, journeys, and milestones: define who the system serves at what altitude, convert client goals into measurable outputs and user milestones agreed before the build starts
Quality assurance and implementation support: write test scripts, lead user acceptance testing, maintain the traceability matrix, triage defects, support post-launch hypercare
Change management and client enablement: build training materials, SOPs, and documentation, run end-user training to drive adoption, hold stakeholder alignment together through technical and process shifts
AI and agents in the work: use agents to speed up analysis, draft artifacts, and pressure-test specifications, with human review before anything reaches a client

What We Expect
Five years in business analysis, systems analysis, or consulting delivery, including at least two implementations carried from discovery through user acceptance.

Requirements (4+ years): workshop facilitation, FRD and SRS authoring, user stories with acceptance criteria, traceability, scope control
Process design (3+ years): As-Is and To-Be mapping, swimlane or BPMN notation, gap analysis, control and approval placement
Platforms (3+ years): vendor evaluation and configuration on Salesforce, HubSpot, SAP, NetSuite, or comparable, plus API integration patterns
Data (working depth): data flow and entity relationship modeling, SQL, migration and mapping strategy, data quality profiling, reporting tools
Testing (2+ years): test script authoring, UAT leadership with client users, defect triage, hypercare support
AI tooling (working depth): working use of AI assistants and agent workflows for research, drafting, and analysis

Useful, Not Required

Delivery across more than one industry, and the discipline to learn an unfamiliar operating model quickly
Control mapping against NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or SOC 2, comfort talking to an assessor
Formal change management training, or SOP and curriculum design for client teams

Who This Suits
Our clients are executives and the operators who report to them, not product teams. A specification nobody outside the project reads is a liability here. You ask the uncomfortable scoping question early, separate what a client said from what you concluded, and are comfortable having your own document marked up.

Engagement Terms

Classification: 1099 independent contractor, statement of work per engagement, you carry your own equipment and insurance
Compensation: hourly or fixed fee, set at the first call based on scope and experience
Location and schedule: remote, with occasional onsite client work in San Diego, discovery weeks run heavier than build weeks
Intellectual property: we own deliverables produced under the statement of work, background IP you bring stays yours
Term and renewal: each statement of work is scoped in weeks, extensions run through a written amendment
Invoicing: invoiced monthly against the statement of work
Confidentiality: mutual NDA signed before client systems access, client data stays inside client-controlled environments

How to Apply
Send the following to [email protected] with the subject line "Business Systems Analyst":

One requirements document, specification, or process map you wrote, redact client names and figures
A resume or profile link, no cover letter
A short note on one workflow you redesigned: what you removed, and how you knew it worked

Selection Process

Screening call, 30 minutes: scope of the first engagement, your availability, and rate
Working session, 60 minutes: a live scoping conversation against a sample client situation, no take-home project
References and paperwork: two references, then a statement of work for the first scope

We aim to give a decision within a week of the working session.
