Senior Backend Engineer

Scanwick builds financial-data infrastructure for Nigerian lenders. Most credit decisions are made on a snapshot: a borrower hands over a statement, someone reads it, the loan goes out, and nobody looks again until a repayment is missed.

We work on the part after that. Continuous monitoring of a borrower's financial position once money has been disbursed, and an audit trail that lets a credit committee interrogate every conclusion we reach.

The engineering problems are about evidence rather than volume. Establishing how much of a borrower's financial life you can actually see, and saying so plainly when the answer is "not much." Detecting meaningful change early enough for a lender to act on it. Making every figure traceable to the transactions underneath it, months later, when a file is reviewed. And deciding what a system should return when it genuinely cannot determine an answer, because in credit, a confident wrong number costs more than an honest gap.

Compensation: read this first

We are pre-launch and pre-revenue. We cannot pay a market salary yet, and we won't pretend otherwise. The role is:

Meaningful equity, with a documented vesting schedule
A monthly data and internet allowance
Transition to a salary as revenue begins or funding closes

Post-disbursement monitoring and signal detection
Account aggregation and coverage measurement
Audit trails, provenance and reconciliation
Backend architecture and APIs
Secure handling of financial and personal data
Consent management and data-protection controls
Production infrastructure, testing and reliability

Stack: Python and FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Celery, REST APIs, ETL pipelines, cloud infrastructure, third-party financial integrations.

One firm requirement

Prior professional experience with financial data, banking, lending, credit, payments, account aggregation, KYC or BVN systems. This isn't a preference. The work is unforgiving about correctness in ways general web development isn't, and we don't have the runway to teach it.
