About the job

About Relief Cardiovascular

Relief Cardiovascular is a pioneering medical device start up dedicated to transforming the management of heart failure. The company’s technology, the Relief System, is a transcatheter smart implant designed to monitor and modulate renal vein pressures to improve fluid management in heart failure patients. Our small, focused team moves with urgency and purpose — every role here has direct impact on patients and on the success of the company. We are looking for people who thrive in ambiguity, take ownership without being asked, and are energized — not intimidated — by the challenge of building something that has never been built before.

The Role

We are seeking an R&D Engineer II with hands-on mechanical or electromechanical experience to join our core engineering team. In this role, you will support design verification and design transfer activities for complex electromechanical subsystems, working side-by-side with a multidisciplinary team of engineers. This is a hands-on role: you will spend meaningful time in our cleanroom physically building and inspecting product, in addition to authoring and executing test protocols and documentation. We move quickly and our priorities shift often, so we're looking for someone who is highly organized, learns new systems and processes quickly, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. You will create drawings, support tolerance stack-ups, build devices and DV fixtures, execute design verification testing, and inspect components and subassemblies under a microscope to exacting tolerances.

Skills and Responsibilities

• Build Relief systems in the clean room to support DV and clinical activities.

• Inspect components and subassemblies under a microscope and X-ray to verify dimensional, feature, and cosmetic conformance to specification.

• Support design transfer activities to manufacturing, ensuring drawings, specifications, and process documentation are complete, unambiguous, and manufacturable and sufficient inventory is available for builds.

• Create tooling, fixturing, and inspection methods used for manufacturing and design verification.

• Generate and maintain controlled engineering drawings to GD&T standards, including tolerance stack-ups.

• Execute design verification activities, including authoring V&V protocols, conducting bench testing, and writing formal test reports.

• Execute mechanical, electrical, dimensional, and functional verification testing.

• Support communication with precision machining, metal fabrication, and specialty manufacturing suppliers on fit, form, and function questions.

• Keep detailed, organized records of builds, test data, and documentation to maintain traceability and support a clean audit trail.

• Quickly pick up new tools, processes, and subsystems, and adapt as priorities shift in a fast-paced start-up environment.

Required Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

• 2-4 years of hands-on mechanical and/or electromechanical engineering experience in medical device development, ideally with exposure to design verification and design transfer.

• Experience generating and executing design verification protocols

• Experience inspecting components under a microscope, with full documentation in a DHF.

• Hands on experience building devices using processes such as laser welding, adhesive bonding, and reflowing.

• Highly organized, with strong attention to detail across overlapping builds, tests, inventory management, and documentation.

• A quick learner who is energized, not overwhelmed, by a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.

• Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks) including assembly modeling, drawing generation, and configuration management.

• Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and demonstrated ability to create and review engineering drawings and support tolerance stack-up analyses.

• Comfort operating in ambiguity: you can define the path forward when one doesn’t exist yet.

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to implantable or Class III cardiovascular devices (leads, catheters, implant systems, or similar).

• Familiarity with creating electromechanical test fixtures (Arduino coding, motors, etc.).

• Exposure to fatigue testing methodologies for implantable components and relevant standards.

• Prior experience at a startup or early-stage medical device company.

Compensation & Benefits

Our salary ranges are determined based on role, level, and relevant industry factors. Compensation for this position will be based on an individual’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, education, and certifications. We also assess internal equity and current market conditions when determining salaries.

• Base salary range: $85,000 to $110,000

• Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401k, etc.)
