Standard BioTools Canada is hiring a hands-on Mechanical Engineer II to join our R&D instrumentation team in Markham, ON. You will be the mechanical designer for multiple modules on our instrumentation platforms, owning execution from early concept through production release.

Description:

  • Serve as the mechanical designer for assigned modules of the research platform, owning the design from concept through release.

  • Generate and maintain SolidWorks assemblies, parts, drawings, and BOMs, with SolidWorks PDM as the system of record.

  • Participate in mechanical architecture decisions, weighing in on component and material selection, tolerance stacks, GD&T, DFM, and DFA.

  • Build, test, and debug your own hardware prototypes alongside the R&D team.

  • Lead design reviews and produce the technical artifacts (for example trade studies, specifications, drawings, ECOs, and validation plans) required for design release.

  • Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and contract manufacturers to take designs from one-off prototype to repeatable, manufacturable products.

  • Execute Verification and Validation testing and full system operation to qualify designs and ensure fit for purpose.

  • Develop test methods and jigs as required to execute V&V testing.

  • Complete Sustaining Engineering tasks: root-cause field and production issues, drive corrective actions, and execute design changes through controlled processes.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, and validation engineers to integrate subsystems into reliable instruments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of mechanical design and product development experience, including designs you have personally released to production.

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, including large and complex assemblies, top-down design, configurations, weldments, and drawing automation.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, and stack-up methodology.

  • Demonstrated experience designing for manufacturability across CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, casting, and common fabrication processes.

  • Hands-on experience building, instrumenting, and debugging prototype hardware.

  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to produce clear, decision-grade technical documentation.
