Job ID: 1395

The Role:

IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world's leading quantum company delivering solutions to solve the world's most complex problems. IonQ's newest generation quantum computers, IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, are the latest in cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA achieve 20x performance results. The company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance in 2025.

The company is accelerating its technology roadmap and intends to deliver the world's most powerful quantum computers with 2 million qubits by 2030 to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. IonQ's advancements in quantum networking position the company as a leader in building the quantum internet.

We are looking for a VP, Quantum Computing Product Marketing to lead marketing for IonQ's Compute division. The division builds the world's leading quantum computers, provides cloud access to those systems, and co-develops quantum applications with selected enterprise customers. In this role, you will own the overarching market story for that portfolio, and the share of voice it earns us, contributing to the division's mission of establishing IonQ as the clear category leader in quantum computing.

You will work directly with product, science, engineering, applications, sales and executive teams to understand deeply complex technical capability, then translate it into clear, differentiated market positions. The task is to align executive leadership, product and go-to-market teams around a single Compute narrative, with consistent framing, language and claims across every customer, partner, analyst and investor engagement, while preserving the technical authority of each individual product and customer solution. To all intents and purposes, this is the chief marketing role for Compute.

Responsibilities:

In this position, you will define and maintain the Compute narrative, the messaging architecture beneath it, and the launch strategy that carries both into the market. You will work from the technology roadmap through to market-ready storylines, monitor the competitive landscape and turn that intelligence into positioning and priorities, and set the guidance the division uses for communicating complex quantum concepts with both technical precision and market credibility.

You will partner with the Senior Director of Creative on how the story is expressed, with product management and engineering in a milestone-driven environment, and with cross-product marketing and communications on shared storylines. You will arrive without a team, with the remit to tell us what this function should be rather than inherit an assumption, and to build it. Within the first six to twelve months, success looks like one unified narrative adopted across executive leadership, Product, Sales, Marketing and Communications; major launches supported by clear claims and coordinated execution rather than isolated announcements; and a leadership team with a sharper view of market narrative, competitive dynamics and emerging category opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Define and own the overarching Compute narrative and messaging architecture, hold it consistent across every customer, partner, analyst and investor touchpoint, and establish the guidance the division uses to communicate complex quantum concepts credibly.
  • Lead launch strategy, messaging and content for major Compute products and technical milestones, working from the technology roadmap through to market-ready storylines, and driving cross-functional alignment so every launch lands as part of one argument.
  • Own share of voice for Compute, setting the event, campaign and creative strategy that carries the narrative into the market, and lifting IonQ from a reactive tone into a leadership one.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape and translate market intelligence into positioning and priorities, presenting strategy to executives and acting as a trusted partner to Compute leadership.
  • Define the operating model, governance and hiring plan for Compute marketing, and build the function from nothing to a team of two to five people over the first eighteen months.

Experience & Background

To be successful, you will bring at least ten years in B2B technology marketing, product marketing or category strategy, including significant leadership experience in complex technical markets where the category was still being defined. We are looking for someone who can earn the trust of scientists and engineers, learn a frontier technology quickly, get to the heart of what it actually does, and turn that into a story a commercial audience will act on. Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who will electrify this business: courageous, willing to push back on the product and on the messaging, and not comfortable with the status quo.

We do not require prior quantum experience. What matters is a track record of turning frontier technology into a story people want to hear. Relevant backgrounds include cloud infrastructure, AI and machine learning, high performance computing, semiconductors, advanced computing, scientific instrumentation, biotechnology, aerospace and other deep technology markets. The role is based at our US headquarters near Seattle, and involves travel for cross-site, customer, event and executive engagements.

You'd be a great fit with:

  • At least ten years in B2B technology or product marketing, with leadership experience in technically complex markets, and exceptional written, verbal and visual communication supported by a portfolio of executive-level messaging, product launches and thought leadership you personally shaped.
  • A record of translating frontier or scientifically complex technology into stories that reached a much broader audience, gained by engaging deeply with product, engineering and science teams to extract the substance rather than being handed a brief.
  • Proven ability to present to, advise and influence senior executives on market narrative, launch strategy and competitive positioning, alongside the confidence to challenge the product and the messaging rather than accept them.
  • Experience building share of voice in a crowded market through integrated campaigns, events, content, executive communications and creative work, and a strong product orientation gained working with product management and engineering in milestone-driven environments.
  • Experience building or specifying a marketing function rather than inheriting one, and comfort in a high-growth environment where the market is still being educated, the roadmap is technically complex and the category narrative is actively being defined.
