UITS TELECOMMUNICATION INFRAST (UA-NTEL-IUBLA)

The Intelligent Infrastructure (II) team is the driving force behind Indiana University's (IU) private cloud. We design, deploy, and manage a complex and georedundant, virtualized computing and storage environment that provides Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to the entire university community. From department workload to crucial campus operations, if it runs at IU, there is a very high chance it runs on our infrastructure.

This position is on the Storage and Virtualization (SAV) team and provides senior level expertise for the storage and data protection systems that ensure university data is available, secure, and recoverable during system failures or major incidents. These systems are a key part of Indiana University's business continuity strategy and are essential for protecting critical services from downtime.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Coordinates projects.
  • Provides oversight for complex work.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for collaboration with other UITS teams and university stakeholders.
  • Ensures projects are delivered efficiently.
  • Manages risks appropriately.
  • Ensures the existing team can continue to support a growing and increasingly complex service environment.

General Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, and implements advanced systems that adhere to university policies and standards; evaluates, monitors, and assesses current systems to design and develop system updates/modifications and/or to resolve issues; provides a senior point of escalation in regard to complex and difficult system performance issues.
  • Makes recommendations to improve, as well as provides, bug reporting and identification, test case authoring and refinement, automation scripts, and works closely with other technical teams to resolve highly complex and difficult problems; reviews work and often provides guidance to junior peers.
  • Leads in establishing metrics and determining systems configuration(s) to ensure optimum performance and security in accordance with strategy and operational goals; analyzes capacity data and leads in the development of capacity plans.
  • Ensures proper documentation of systems infrastructure design decisions, issues/resolutions, as well as leads service disaster recovery planning.
  • Collaborates with systems professionals on other teams and across the university to analyze/evaluate new capabilities and emerging technologies that could improve university systems performance.
  • Researches and stays abreast of current higher education systems engineering trends; stays up-to-date and makes recommendations to improve systems engineering best practices, tools, and approaches.
  • May serve as project leader; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION

*Required*

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science or related field.

*Required*WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years of systems engineering or related experience.

*Preferred*

  • 3 years of experience in Storage Array Administration (including managing multi-pebibyte storage infrastructure including capacity and performance, LUN allocations for complex cluster configurations, and troubleshooting performance in a storage area network (SAN)).
  • 3 years of experience in multi-site storage infrastructure (including Tier1 NVMe Fiber channel Storage arrays, Tier2 Fiber channel Storage arrays, object storage infrastructure, especially S3 compatible object storage, and Network Attached Storage infrastructure).
  • 3 years of experience in advanced business continuity management (including, site failover management for IP based storage infrastructure, site failure management for Fiber Channel storage infrastructure).
  • 3 years of experience in data protection and replication technologies (including enterprise data protection management leveraging agentless hardware-based snapshots and agent-based technologies, synchronous replication, and asynchronous replication).
  • 3 years of experience in supporting complex fiber channel infrastructure (including managing fiber trunks, cassettes, and jumpers, fiber channel zoning, peer zoning, FCIP routing, designing and managing FCIP fabric extensions leveraging redundant ethernet routing, server administration, management of hypervisors, windows server administration, Linux administration, database administration, patch management strategies, and firewall administration (host based and appliance)).
  • 3 years of experience in system administration (Windows, Linux, Hypervisor, Container infrastructure).

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position will be on call in support of critical services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
