Unlike a Solutions Architect, whose background may span infrastructure, networking, or systems engineering, the Software Architect role at ClearScale requires deep hands-on software development experience. This individual must bring a proven track record of designing and building complex applications, establishing engineering standards, and making binding technical decisions at the code and framework level. What You’ll Do

• Lead technical discovery sessions with business and engineering stakeholders to deeply understand application requirements, system behaviors, and integration constraints
• Define application architecture for cloud-native and modernized systems, including service decomposition, API design, data modeling, domain boundaries, and inter-service communication patterns
• Establish and enforce software engineering standards across engagements, including coding conventions, design patterns, code review practices, and technical debt management strategies
• Own architectural decisions at the code and framework level: evaluate and select application frameworks, ORM and data access strategies, caching layers, messaging patterns, and testing approaches
• Make and document trade-off decisions during implementation, balancing performance, maintainability, cost, and time-to-delivery; establish reusable architectural patterns for delivery teams
• Design fault-tolerant, highly available distributed application architectures leveraging AWS services, with emphasis on event-driven, asynchronous, and serverless patterns where appropriate
• Define non-functional requirement (NFR) frameworks for engagements, including performance budgets, SLA/SLO targets, observability standards, and security posture at he application tier
• Consult and advise engineers, architects, and executives on technology stack selection, helping translate business problems into well-structured software solutions
• Create SOWs and/or provide structured, comprehensive technical context to delivery teams; ensure architectural intent is preserved through implementation
• Build and maintain trusted advisor relationships with all levels in a client organization, from development leads to senior executives; handle the strategic technical vision and align roadmaps
• Accelerate innovation by identifying high-impact, repeatable application patterns for enterprises, iteratively deploying them, and representing ClearScale’s software architecture capabilities to customers and the community
• Author technical publications including blog entries, case studies, and reference architectures

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• 8+ years of professional software development experience building enterprise-grade applications, with direct hands-on coding and technical leadership responsibilities
• 5+ years of consulting experience with a track record of leading application architecture engagements for external clients, or comparable experience driving software architecture decisions within a product organization
• Deep fluency in software design patterns and architectural paradigms: microservices, domain-driven design (DDD), event sourcing, CQRS, API-first design, and twelve-factor application methodology
• 4+ years of hands-on experience with the AWS cloud platform, with strong working knowledge of application-tier services including Lambda, API Gateway, ECS/Fargate,
• Step Functions, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, Aurora, ElastiCache, and S3
• Strong data modeling and data architecture skills at the application tier: schema design for relational and NoSQL databases, data access patterns, caching strategies, and event-driven data flows
• Experience designing and implementing containerized application architectures, with clear understanding of when and why to choose containers versus serverless versus traditional compute, including the trade-offs of each
• Experience building fault-tolerant, zero-downtime distributed systems with well-defined resilience patterns (circuit breakers, bulkheads, retry/backoff, graceful degradation)
• Demonstrated ability to define and enforce API contracts, interface boundaries, and service-level integration standards across multi-team delivery efforts
• Understanding of project management methodologies and frameworks (Agile, Lean
• Development, waterfall) as they apply to software delivery
• Comfort assuming high-profile technical leadership roles in demanding, highly visible customer engagements
• Strong listening, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to articulate complex software architecture concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

Nice to have

• Experience with enterprise application migration and modernization on AWS, including strangler-fig patterns, database migration strategies, and incremental decomposition of monolithic systems
• Experience working with secured and regulated data (e.g., PHI, PCI, classified data) and implementing compliance requirements at the application layer
• Deep understanding of database internals and trade-offs across columnar, key-value, document, and graph database technologies
• Experience defining and implementing observability strategies: structured logging, distributed tracing, application-level metrics, and alerting frameworks
• Experience giving public technical presentations and contributing to developer communities
