About the job
This is an equity-only position using the Slicing Pie dynamic equity model. There is no cash compensation currently. If that doesn't work for your situation, this role isn't a fit. Read on only if equity-only makes sense for you right now.
About Equity Forge
Equity Forge (equityforge.io) is building infrastructure that transforms how people build skills and wealth: creating pathways from verified volunteering to paid marketplace work to startup equity participation, all on one platform.
We're a spinoff of DemocracyLab (democracylab.org), which has facilitated over 10,000 skilled volunteer placements since 2018. Our core innovation is professional identity built on verified evidence: activity tracking, peer attestation, documented outcomes.
The Role
We're looking for a UX/UI Designer to help turn our product direction into screens people can actually use. You'll work from the user stories organized in our Equity Forge Tracker and design the Figma flows for three systems we're building: Proof (verified work evidence), Accord (agreements and ownership tracking), and Mosaic (AI-generated professional profiles from that verified data).
You'll join a design manager and other skilled designers already producing work against a live roadmap. We have more design work queued than people to do it.
What You'll Do
Design Production
- Translate user stories from the Equity Forge Tracker into wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity Figma screens
- Design end-to-end flows for Proof, Accord, and Mosaic as those systems get built
- Maintain consistency across screens as multiple designers contribute to the same product
Collaboration
- Work with our design manager on design review and usability study planning
- Coordinate with other designers on shared design patterns and component reuse in Figma
- Partner with our UX writer so copy and interface design develop together
- Use UserTesting to gather feedback and incorporate findings into iterations
- Work from requirements that our Technical Product Manager writes for each user story
Judgment
- Make design decisions in a resource-constrained, pre-launch environment where not everything can be built at once
- Flag gaps between what user stories describe and what a workable screen actually requires
What We're Looking For
Required
- 5+ years of experience designing production interfaces, with a portfolio showing end-to-end work, not just visual polish
- Strong Figma skills, including component libraries and shared design systems
- Experience designing for complex, multi-user platforms
- Comfort working from written user stories and requirements rather than open-ended briefs
- Clear communication; we're fully remote and coordinate over Slack and Google Meet
Valuable
- Experience with marketplace, credentialing, or professional-identity products
- Background working in early-stage or equity-compensated environments
- Familiarity with UserTesting or similar platforms and translating findings into design changes
Compensation & Commitment
This is an equity-only role using the Slicing Pie dynamic equity model. Your ownership stake grows proportionally with your contribution. There is no cash compensation currently. Time commitment is flexible. We care about consistent progress and reliable collaboration, not rigid schedules.
This is a fully remote position, open to candidates anywhere, on the same terms. Our operating agreement specifies Oregon, USA jurisdiction for dispute resolution.
This role makes sense if you:
- Find the mission of democratizing access to wealth creation compelling
- Want meaningful ownership in something you're helping build
- Have financial runway to work without immediate income
Team & Context
Our engineering team has grown to seven part-time contributors, supported by a Technical Product Manager who writes requirements for each user story before it reaches design. Design has a manager and a small group of designers already working from the same tracker you'll pull from.
