About the job

About Ommo

Ommo is the pioneer of permanent magnet–based 3D tracking technology, building a next-generation tracking platform based on magnetic sensing. Our technology enables ultra-precise, real-time 6DOF tracking for millimeter-scale wireless sensors, up to 1,000 times per second with accuracy down to 0.1mm, without line-of-sight constraints. We partner with medical device OEMs and advanced technology companies developing surgical navigation, robotics, simulation, spatial intelligence, and human-machine interface systems.

We are seeking an experienced and driven Head of Mechanical Engineering to lead and take ownership of our product development team. The Head of Mechanical Engineering at Ommo is a highly technical, hands-on engineering leader who drives the mechanical architecture, precision design, and productization of our core technology. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in solving complex mechanical problems, driving design rigor, and building best-in-class hardware. You’ll play a key part in shaping our technology and supporting the growth of both the team and the company, without the heavy administrative focus that comes with a traditional director-level role. If you're eager to take on challenges and thrive in a fast-paced environment we’d love to hear from you!

Roles & Responsibilities

Product Development Leadership

  • Lead the technical direction and execution of the mechanical design lifecycle from concept and prototyping through validation and release, ensuring designs meet performance, precision, and manufacturability targets.
  • Lead the design and prototyping of test fixtures and equipment for R&D and production, ensuring product reliability and manufacturability.

Technical Excellence

  • Create and review engineering drawings with a focus on GD&T best practices, ensuring compliance with standards and optimizing for manufacturing processes.
  • Perform detailed engineering analyses (including stress, thermal, wear, and tolerance stack-ups) using FEA and hand calculations to validate and refine designs.
  • Own complex 3D CAD design efforts, driving component and assembly architecture across machined, molded, and additive manufacturing processes.
  • Conduct rigorous design reviews with deep technical scrutiny around failure modes, tolerances, DFM, and system integration, ensuring alignment with project schedules.

Team Management and Leadership

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to mechanical engineers, raising the bar for design rigor, documentation quality, and problem solving.
  • Model technical excellence through hands-on contributions while supporting the team in resolving complex mechanical challenges.
  • Drive team performance by setting clear objectives, managing workloads, and providing regular feedback.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align mechanical design decisions with system-level requirements.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Own the creation and review of design documentation (including PDPs, Design Inputs/Outputs, Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), risk analyses, V&V plans, and ECRs) ensuring full traceability and compliance with ISO 13485 throughout the product development lifecycle.

Quality and Process Management

  • Evaluate manufacturing and quality data to diagnose failures, identify root causes, and implement effective design or process improvements.
  • Lead the development and refinement of mechanical processes and material strategies to enhance reliability and manufacturability.
  • Plan and coordinate research and development activities related to new materials, manufacturing methods, and process validation.
  • Approve engineering documentation, drawings, and ECRs as required, ensuring accuracy and compliance with ISO 13485.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of Senior Level Mechanical Engineering Experience; or related discipline
  • 3-5 years of Engineering Leadership Experience
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in medical device design/manufacturing or similar fields
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields
  • Experience and skills in conflict resolution & team leadership.
  • Lead engineer or manager for product(s) that made it to series production
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD design, FEA, and 2D drafting/ drawings
  • Experience with medical device design & manufacturing documentation throughout the product development process
  • Experience with ISO 13485 or equivalent quality system requirements (e.g., regulated or compliance-driven environments)
  • Self motivated and capable of driving and leading projects
  • Good planning and time management skills
  • Comfortable with and capable of solving very complex and ambiguous problems and managing multiple projects simultaneously

Nice to Have

  • Siemens NX Experience
  • CAM & CNC experience
