About the job

The company

You might think we’re just another creative agency driven by client deadlines, profitability and corporate culture. Think again – when it comes to collaborating with new clients, one of the pillars we assess is the people behind the brand. Since 2014, HRVST began with a simple mission – to treat every project like our own. What exactly do we do? Everything from ecommerce to brand building, design and content. As Shopify Plus Partners, we’re building for brands migrating to, already on, or ready to develop a new store on the platform.

We’re not a boutique agency, we’re a small shop. We’re strong because of our team – the best idea always wins. We out-perform bigger agencies by applying small shop smarts to every project. Thinking small means attention to detail, but it also means having the time and energy to focus on our clients’ needs. Our small but specialized team is designed to create efficient systems that are tailor-made for our clients.

The role

The Developer will work in conjunction with Account Managers and fellow developers. Your role is to translate design into scalable, high-quality technical solutions. Using your coding skills, we expect you to push web development boundaries and execute plans with precision and efficiency.

Success in this role requires sharp attention to detail, conceptual thinking, a wide variety of styles, and a well-organized, solutions-oriented mindset. A sense of humour, a love of design, and a taste for challenge are essential – along with the curiosity and confidence to lead by example and help shape the future of creative at HRVST.

You will work closely with the Account team to ensure alignment between strategy, scope, and execution across all projects.

This role reports directly to the Account Director. During periods where the Account Director is unavailable, reporting will shift to the Creative Director.

The culture

  • Remote-first, by design: We believe great work is about outcomes, not desks. Work where you are most productive.
  • Health, dental, and life insurance: We support your mental and physical well-being so you can do your best work and feel good doing it.
  • A proper home office setup: Every team member is outfitted with a new MacBook Pro and an external monitor so you are set up for success from day one.
  • Generous time off that is actually encouraged: Enjoy summer Fridays, up to five weeks of vacation per year, and your birthday off to celebrate however you want.
  • Protected focus time: Deep work matters here. We intentionally protect focus time so meaningful work can actually get done.
  • High standards, no agency ego: We care deeply about quality, collaboration, and doing the work right. The best idea wins.
  • Intentional time together: While we are remote-first, we make time to connect through off-sites, retreats, happy hours, lunch and learns, and holiday events.
  • Bonus and referral programs that reward impact: We value contributions and recognize great work through company-wide bonus programs, referral opportunities, and role-specific incentives tied to growth and performance.
  • Growth that’s intentional: We offer development plans, regular performance check-ins, and support for skills training, courses, conferences, and industry events so you always know where you stand and how you can continue to grow.
  • A commitment to giving back: We partner with Bread & Beyond to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and we empower our team to contribute to meaningful causes.

The responsibilities

Craft, technical expertise, and problem solving

  • Embrace and display passion and curiosity for web development and ecommerce while staying updated on trends, framework updates, and industry standards, incorporating these into projects.
  • Analyze and think critically to solve problems and arrive at insights that inspire innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrate expertise in web development best practices, including SEO, accessibility standards, and UX principles, while adapting to various development environments, platforms, languages, and frameworks to deliver modern, optimized solutions.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions for new client pitches or internal projects, generating fresh ideas to create innovative solutions.
  • Operate with a high level of autonomy, taking ownership of technical execution and outcomes.

Technical planning, architecture, and collaboration

  • Collaborate with fellow developers to plan architecture, define technical approaches, and shape case creation and build strategies, ensuring outcomes are clearly documented and shared with the internal team.
  • Provide recommendations for tools, plugins, libraries, frameworks, and platforms by gathering insights from external sales and support personnel, reviewing project proposals or feature requests, and communicating findings effectively.
  • Collaborate with other developers to ensure consistent coding practices, adherence to timelines, and provide technical guidance and support on development tasks (rubber-ducking).
  • Assist in onboarding new hires and provide technical support to fellow developers.

Project delivery, coordination, and communication

  • Work closely with Account Managers to align on scope, priorities, and timelines while ensuring delivery stays on track.
  • Manage your schedule to ensure alignment with project timelines and team collaboration.
  • Manage personal deliverables proactively, including accurate time estimation and clear communication of progress and blockers.
  • Estimate time needed to execute on new projects and manage time efficiently to consistently deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Communicate regularly with production members and the Account team via Slack and Asana to address updates, questions, and feedback, ensuring alignment on project goals, deadlines, and tasks.
  • Collaborate with external partners when applicable, ensuring technical alignment and clarity.
  • Prepare for increased availability during peak seasons (e.g., evenings, weekends) to manage high-priority projects and shifted timelines effectively.

Development execution and implementation

  • Own development deliverables from implementation through launch, ensuring performance, quality, and scalability.
  • Build and maintain design-heavy, responsive, and high-quality custom and customized theme websites.
  • Develop reusable components and libraries aligned with HRVST standards.
  • Implement and work fluently with third-party APIs.
  • Develop and integrate campaign-specific features (e.g., BFCM, cookie policies, DMARC, performance audits).
  • Handle the software development cycle from kickoff to launch.
  • Support internal projects by conducting development updates on the HRVST website.
  • Conduct website maintenance and data analysis (Squarespace, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Ahrefs).

Quality assurance, testing, and standards

  • Test and review development work locally and on staging environments to ensure it meets expectations and agency standards before final review.
  • Conduct QA and peer reviews of code to ensure deliverables meet high standards of accuracy, efficiency, scalability, and maintainability, addressing potential issues or bugs.

Documentation, process improvement, and client support

  • Triage and quote on demand development tasks, clarifying briefs, defining technical requirements, providing estimates, and collaborating with the Account Manager to finalize scope.
  • Identify out-of-scope feedback or requests during production and proactively flag them to the Account Manager, collaborating on alternative solutions that respect project constraints while preserving client satisfaction.
  • Conduct research, provide actionable steps for implementing solutions, and document findings in Notion for future use.
  • Maintain internal resources, documentation, workflows, and project-related templates using tools like Asana, Figma, Notion, and Google Suite.
  • Maintain an organized workspace by regularly cleaning and organizing project files, including desktop, downloads, and drive folders.
  • Improve workflow by building and refining internal processes.
  • Own the development of post-project recaps in collaboration with the Account Manager, summarizing wins, learnings, and areas for improvement for both internal and client-facing purposes.
  • Communicate with clients as needed, providing insights and support to address specific requests.
  • Participate in quarterly reviews to reflect on personal strengths, identify areas for improvement, and set actionable goals.

The requirements

  • 2+ years agency experience as a Developer.
  • Interest in and/or experience working with Liquid (Shopify).
  • Familiarity working with Shopify themes and apps.
  • Familiarity working with Webflow themes and apps.
  • Experience building high-quality, responsive websites.
