Sr Java Back-end Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Java Back-end engineer who can hit the ground running and take ownership of initiatives end-to-end. You'll work directly with the VP of Engineering on the APIs and data pipelines that power our platform, with real influence over architecture decisions. This is a hands-on IC role: you'll ship production code yourself, not just design it. You combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative, process-minded approach — you keep the team in the loop, and you understand that good engineering is as much about communication as it is about execution.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and maintain RESTful and event-driven microservices in Java (and Python optional)
• Own and extend integrations with third-party platforms — CRMs, EMRs, marketing automation, and analytics tools
• Build and maintain data pipelines that move, transform, and deliver structured data reliably
• Instrument services for observability (logging, tracing, alerting) and participate in on-call rotation
• Lead technical initiatives: scope the work, surface blockers early, and pull in what you need to ship
• Identify gaps proactively and bring well-reasoned recommendations to the team

What we're looking for

• 4+ years of recent back-end engineering experience with Java
• Strong foundation in building production-grade REST APIs and microservices
• Proficiency with relational databases; ability to write and optimize SQL queries
• Used to working with Claude Code day to day — you know how to direct it, review what it produces, and when not to trust it
• Highly collaborative and at ease on video — standups, design discussions and pairing over a call are normal working tools for you
• Ownership with visibility: you drive your work without being managed step-by-step, and the team always knows where it stands
• Process-minded: you loop in the right people before making impactful changes, and document your work as a matter of habit
• Clear, concise communicator — you can explain a trade-off or a design choice to the technical VP of Engineering and to non-technical stakeholders
• Strong on code review — every PR here gets a thorough review; you explain your design decisions, engage seriously with feedback, and change course when the argument is better
• Startup experience — you know what it means to operate with lean resources and high expectations

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare tech (HIPAA familiarity a plus)
• Background with conversational AI, LLM APIs, NLP platforms, or chatbot infrastructure
