About the job
About Us
Disasters I/O is on a mission to help state and local governments respond to and recover from disasters faster and smarter. We combine cutting-edge geospatial analysis, AI-driven insights, and a hands-on professional services arm to build resilient communities. As we gear up for our next phase, we’re looking for a founding software engineer to shape the core of our platform and product vision.
What You’ll Do
- Architect & Build the end-to-end platform: mobile apps (iOS/Android) and responsive web interfaces.
- Lead Front-to-Back Development using React (Web), React Native or similar (Mobile), Python back-ends (FastAPI, Django), and TypeScript.
- Design & Implement scalable APIs, data pipelines, and real-time mapping services that integrate satellite, drone, and sensor feeds.
- Integrate Generative AI & Agents to automate workflows (e.g., damage assessment, threat analysis), build intelligent assistants, and prototype novel use-cases.
- Own Our Geospatial Stack: ingest, process, and visualize GIS data (GeoJSON, raster tiles, vector tiles) using libraries like Turf.js, GDAL, or rasterio.
- Collaborate Across Functions: pair with emergency managers, public works, and operators to translate user needs into robust, maintainable code.
- Drive Best Practices: establish testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and documentation standards from day one.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software development (or equivalent track record).
- Proven full-stack expertise: React (or equivalent), Postgres back-end, and TypeScript.
- Mobile app experience (React Native, Flutter, or native).
- Solid understanding of RESTful and/or GraphQL API design.
- Hands-on with geospatial data formats and APIs (e.g., PostGIS, Mapbox, Leaflet).
- Strong CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system design, and performance optimization.
- Excellent communication skills and comfort in a fast-paced startup environment
Strong Pluses
- Experience building or integrating generative AI/agent frameworks (LangChain, Rasa, OpenAI Agents).
- Prior work on complex geospatial platforms or enterprise GIS solutions.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Open source contributions or side projects showcasing your passion.
What We Offer
- Equity & Early Impact: Significant ownership in a mission-driven startup with huge impact
- Flexible Work: Remote-friendly with in-person sprints in San Francisco.
- Healthcare
- Resource Access: High-end cloud infrastructure, satellite imagery credits, drone equipment.
- Culture: Lean teams, no bureaucracy, room to experiment—and fail fast.
