POSITION OVERVIEW
Associate Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Associate Instructors co-teach alongside Instructors to facilitate classroom instruction, teach mini lessons, organize small group and one-on-one instruction, and provide additional Scholar support. Associate Instructors are the first to cover when there is an instructor absence and do not have grading responsibilities. Associate Instructors co-teach Math for 9th or 10th grade Scholars as well as co-teach one block of Identity & Empowerment.
SEO North Carolina is a bichronous program for Scholar with lesson instruction is held 100% online, facilitated through Zoom.
COURSES
Instructors will be placed depending on their self-reported proficiency and demo lesson.
The math courses offered at SEO include:
- 9TH Math: Numbers and Operations, Graphs and Relationships, and Algebra/Pattern and Structure Courses
- Skills include: properties of numbers; expressions, equations, and identities; ratio and rate; percentages; proportional reasoning; irrational numbers; linear, quadratic, and exponential functions (including compound growth formula); algebraic representation of functions; graphing functions and identifying key characteristics; modeling real-world situations with functions; systems of equations and inequalities; algebra with exponents; fractional exponents and roots; algebra with rational expressions and equations; properties 2D and 3D geometric figures; introduction to coordinate geometry.
- 10th Math: Trigonometry, Precalculus, and SAT Math Courses
- Skills include: triangle geometry and special triangles; trigonometric functions; inverse trig functions; radian measure; the unit circle; graphing and modeling with sine and cosine functions; unit analysis; function notation, including function composition and inverse functions; characteristics of graphs; transformations of graphs; average rate of change; introduction to limits; introduction to the derivative and the power rule; and content covered on the new digital SAT.
Math Associate Instructors will also co-teach 1 period of our Identity & Empowerment (IE) class. SEO’s IE classes are designed to prepare Scholars for academic and social success. Throughout their time in the High School Scholars program, Scholars will be engaged with content in IE that will position them to develop as innovative leaders, ones who use their knowledge and experience to both challenge and inform suppositions about the world. Based on which grade level Associate Instructors are placed, they will co-facilitate one of the following IE courses:
- The 9th Grade IE course is “Personal and Social Identities”
- The 10th Grade IE course is “Identity and Mental Health”
- The 11th Grade IE course is “Supplemental Statement Writing”
PROGRAMMING DATES, TIMES, AND HOURS
- Self-guided Asynchronous Instructor Training: New Instructional staff will complete Asynchronous Training that equates to 10 hours of work. This can be completed on your own time and will be completed prior to the start of programming.
- Instructor Orientations: Wednesday, February 12, 5:30-8:30pm on Zoom
- Meet the Instructors: 9th Grade Instructors meet incoming SEO Scholars: Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-6:30pm

- Saturday Academy programming, 9:35am-2:15pm

- Hold office hours, meet with Student Advisor, and engage with Scholars’ work asynchronously

The Instructors’ weekly hours are made up of standard and flex expectations, varying based on the programming weeks. Weekly hours will range from 10-18 hours/week based on asynchronous or synchronous weeks of programming.
- Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working synchronously with staff or students
- Saturday Academy: 9:35am-2:15pm
- Asynchronous Week Office Hours: Thursday evenings, 5:30-7:30pm on select weeks
- Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Online Instruction & Facilitation – Co-Teach four to five periods including ELA and Identity & Empowerment classes. When asked to cover for another instructor, Associate Instructors will lead the class on their own. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement.
- Navigate Instructional Technologies – Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Zoom (video conferencing and chat), Brightspace (Learning Management System), Desmos, and GSuit applications.
- Content Preparation – Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs.
- Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
- Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors – Plan and work alongside an Instructor to build optimal experiences for Scholar learning in co-teaching and/or single instruction models. Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs and respond to all emails and Zoom chats in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in content related field
- Experience working with high school-aged students
- Comfortable with and skilled at navigating technological learning systems
- Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
- Depth of knowledge in Advanced high school-level Mathematics
Preferred:
- Secondary Education Degree and high school teaching experience
- Online Course Facilitation Experience
- Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
- Experience with Online Learning (or e-learning) Tutoring or Instruction, other than Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT)
- North Carolina resident with teaching experience in NC schools.
