About the job

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Senior Instrumentation Engineer - Instrumentation Integration

The SPARC Tokamak Instrumentation & Control Team seeks an instrumentation engineer to coordinate and execute the assembly and end to end commissioning of instrumentation for the Tokamak. Familiarity with voltage taps, optical fibers and/or resistive temperature detections in extreme environments (high vacuum; operating at cryogenic temperatures; high background and transient magnetic fields; and ionizing radiation) is desired. Full instrument end to end scope is anticipated: composed of sensors, sensor mounts, harnesses, electrical junctions, connectors, feedthroughs, and cabinets.

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate with the primary instrumentation engineers and other key stakeholders (assembly teams, manufacturing teams, client system lead engineers, and project managers) to ensure all necessary functions and interfaces are included in the assembly, installation, and commissioning work plans
  • Coordinate and oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of tokamak instrumentation according to the project schedule
  • Manage suppliers of components and integrated subsystems
  • Produce rigorous documentation for engineering deliverables such as instrument lists, signal lists, loop diagrams, data sheets and cabling schedules
  • Produce testing, installation, commissioning, operations, and maintenance procedures
  • Iterate in 3D CAD on components and reviewing parts, assemblies, and drawings
  • Support the development and execution of small-scale testing to ensure procedures and work plans are appropriate.
  • Ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements
  • Maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Coordinated the assembly and installation of instrumentation for complex systems

Bonus points:

  • 5+ years of mechanical analysis experience
  • 5+ years of mechanical integration experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on testing experience
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience
  • Mechanical CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, or similar)
  • Be familiar with interpreting codes and standards (e.g. BPVC/IPC/NASA)
  • GD&T
  • Familiarity with issues pertaining to installing equipment in harsh environments (e.g. high vacuum, high pressure, low temperature, high magnetic field, radiation)
  • FEM analysis tools (e.g. ANSYS. COMSOL)
  • Mechanical system prototyping experience (quick-turn solutions to check fit and function)

Essential Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform extended activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, sitting, etc.
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call regularly
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Onsite
