The Role

As our Founding Data Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in establishing a solid data foundation that will serve as the backbone of our company. You'll have the opportunity to shape our data strategy from the ground up, balancing technical debt, time-to-market, and infrastructure robustness in a high-growth environment.

Key Responsibilities

First and foremost, you're a senior software engineer who knows how to ship production-quality software. You love data and excel at building data pipelines and orchestrating ETL workflows, with experience setting up these systems from scratch in cloud-based environments. You're comfortable with both stream and batch processing and have a proven track record of architecting data systems from the ground up.

With prior startup experience, you balance tech debt, time-to-market, and infrastructure robustness. You've successfully built scalable, enterprise-grade software in high growth environments.

• Design and implement the initial data infrastructure to support various products and business needs, with a focus on speed of delivery and scalability
• Develop and maintain robust data pipelines and ETL workflows for both batch and real-time processing
• Architect and implement data models that enable efficient analysis and manipulation of data
• Ensure data quality, consistency, and accuracy across all systems
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and deliver scalable solutions
• Mentor and guide future data team members as we grow

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a focus on data systems and infrastructure
• 5+ years of programming experience, preferably in Python
• Strong knowledge of databases, ORMs, and data warehousing concepts
• Experience with cloud platforms like AWS
• Expertise in two or more of the following:
  • Setting up and optimizing data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift)
  • Implementing and managing data orchestration systems (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, Dagster)
  • Designing and building batch and stream processing pipelines (e.g., Kafka, Spark, Flink)
• Experience in building, scaling, and maintaining production-level data pipelines, preferably in a high-growth environment
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make trade-offs between immediate needs and long-term scalability
• Low ego, high empathy, and excellent collaboration skills

Nice-to-Haves

• Previous start-up experience at a high-growth start-up
• Knowledge of machine learning operations (MLOps) and experience integrating data pipelines for use in ML models
• Experience with data visualization tools and creating self-service analytics platforms
• Experience working with digital advertising data

Location

Hybrid work environment with minimum 4 days in office in downtown Seattle, WA (remote considered for exceptional candidates)
