About Forterra
Forterra is a leading provider of autonomous systems for ground-based movement in the working world. Amongst some of the earliest innovators in the field of driverless technology, Forterra is focused on building systems that protect front-line soldiers and enable civilian workers in our industrial base. Forterra is the go-to provider of ground autonomy solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, which harnesses the technology for asymmetric warfare in critical conditions.

The Forterra Engineering team seeks an Wiring Technical Designer to join the group with a focus on both Commercial and Military applications. At Forterra, we take ground vehicles systems and make them autonomous by outfitting them with sensors, computers, and power distribution. This requires the design of a lot of different types of very complex cables to interface all these components and be able to handle all sorts of harsh environments. As a member of our team, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and building cable solutions for our autonomous driving systems.
What You’ll Do:
Define and develop custom cabling interconnects adhering to commercial and military requirements and standards.
Design of Altium library components, cable diagrams, cable schematics, appropriate notes and parts list needed to external manufacture cables.
Generation of technical data packages to build requested cables.
Work very closely with Electrical Engineers to support system interconnects, system architecture, and so on.
Communicate effectively with engineering, production/operations, and manufacturing houses.
Participate in design reviews and provide solutions for cable design issues.
Provide support to manufacturing and quality control and test.
Assist the Mechanical engineering team to establish harness/cable routing on the robotic platforms.
Work with the purchasing team to place orders and procure long lead components to meet project deadlines.
Support the integration team to solve issues with cabling and harness issues.
What We’re Looking For:
Experience with Altium, SolidWorks Electrical, Visio, AutoCAD Electrical, Creo, Zuken or similar cable design software.
Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
Experience building and/or designing cables.
Detail-oriented, flexible, self-motivated team-player with excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills.
Able to work effectively in a very fast-paced environment with team members from many different disciplines and backgrounds.
What We Require:
A.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience. Preferably cable manufacturing and/or cable designing experience, in a field with tightly coupled electrical and mechanical components, such as Robotics, Automation, Medical Technology, or Aerospace.
What We Love to See:
Experience working on commercial or military ground vehicles or similar systems.
Experience in the design and use of military style circular connectors.
Experience with low voltage DC power systems such as 12V and 24V.
Experience with cable design requirements for various communication types such as serial, CANbus, and Ethernet.
Experience with hand soldering, hand crimping and rework.
Familiarity with IPC standards.
Experience identifying and suggesting improvements for the cable design process.
Experience in designing for environmental constraints (including temperature, humidity, vibration) EMI/EMC, ESD, etc.
