We are looking for a Staff-level Technical Program Manager. As such, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

In this role, you will facilitate the successful execution of research and development projects by overseeing project planning, coordination, risk management, technical oversight, and stakeholder management. Your leadership and expertise will play a crucial role in driving innovation and ensuring the successful development of groundbreaking technologies in quantum computing.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee the execution of complex research and development projects from inception to completion, ensuring alignment with project budget, scope, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional physicists, engineers, and researchers teams to develop and implement technical strategies for advancing quantum computing initiatives.
  • Provide programmatic guidance and expertise to the team, supporting problem-solving and decision-making processes to overcome programmatic and technical challenges.
  • Manage project budgets, resource allocation, and risk assessment, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budgetary constraints.
  • Act as a key point of contact for the customer and other stakeholders, maintaining clear communication and reporting on project progress, achievements, and potential roadblocks.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in program management methodologies, tools, and processes for managing complex multivariable projects.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including technical specifications, project plans, and technical reports, to ensure clarity and transparency throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Follow the latest developments in quantum computing and related technologies, utilizing this knowledge to develop project proposals within the organization and support roadmap planning.
  • Ability to travel, up to 20% of the time, to support team on-site visits in either College Park, MD, or Bothell, WA.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Technical Program Manager, with a proven track record of successfully managing complex government projects.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively lead cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a keen eye for detail and an innovative mindset.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies, such as Git/Hub, Jira/Confluence, Microsoft Project, SmartSheet, etc.
  • Passion for quantum computing and the desire to be at the forefront of groundbreaking technological advancements.
  • Required to be a US Citizen to access the AFRL base location without major restrictions.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • M.S. or Ph.D in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or other technical domain; or equivalent experience
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or related certification
  • Working knowledge of quantum computing concepts, principles, and technologies
  • Prior experience transitioning first-of-a-kind prototypes to production products
  • Prior experience leading academic grants and/or federal/government contracts
  • Proficiency in Excel, Python, and/or other data analysis tools for organizing, cleaning, and manipulating data.
  • Subject matter expertise in systems engineering or product lifecycle management

Location: This is a hybrid role, and you will be expected to be onsite at AFRL Rome, NY, a few times a week.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $123,191 - $161,289.
