About the job

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Procurement Engineer

The Procurement Engineer is a key member of the Supplier Integration team, whose role is to integrate suppliers into the ARC project from the early stages of product design, ensure flawless execution of the procurement contracts and optimize schedule, cost and quality.

The Procurement Engineer is accountable for selecting the best sources within the assigned budget for each project, negotiating, placing, and managing contracts and orders; and overseeing suppliers’ activities from order to delivery and support.

What you'll do:

  • Drive the execution of source selection projects, coordinating cross-functionally and adhering to commodity strategies where applicable
  • Work with the engineering team to understand the specifications of equipment, parts or services to purchase to meet the project needs
  • Identify potential suppliers, seek their inputs on the specifications and participate in the evaluation of the supplier options
  • Gather and interpret non-technical requirements, draft and review statements of work
  • Drive the source selection from end to end, ensuring such process results systematically in the selection of the best value supplier, balancing price, delivery, quality and service
  • Negotiate short and long-term agreements for parts, subassemblies, finished goods, equipment, and/or services from suppliers
  • Monitor suppliers throughout the execution of the contracts
  • Support cost savings initiatives, lead time improvement projects, quality improvement projects, and recommend changes to processes to improve supply chain performance
  • Create purchase orders up to authorized limits
  • Visit suppliers as necessary to conduct business reviews, check on manufacturing milestones, or resolve technical issues
  • Purchase in both MRP and project/purchase requisition-oriented type environments under departmental guidelines
  • Develop and track reporting against objectives and results

What we’re looking for:

  • 3+ years’ related work experience in a manufacturing, construction, supply chain, engineering or other relevant environment
  • Experience in an engineering or technical role. Ability to read and interpret technical documents and engineering drawings
  • Experience with tactical procurement: managing order placement and fulfillment, line of balance, etc.
  • Understanding of strategic sourcing skills and tools
  • Demonstrated ability to work hand-in-hand with engineering and manufacturing teams from requirements definition to source selection
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate commercial terms with suppliers
  • General understanding of procurement contract structures and clauses
  • Organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize work to meet the business needs
  • Customer service mindset and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Critical thinking and judgment
  • Understanding of ERP systems
  • Demonstrate integrity, respect, commitment to excellence, collaboration, creativity and agility
  • Ability to work well in high-pressure environment

Bonus points:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Supply Chain, Engineering, Business or other related field
  • Previous experience in a start-up or high growth environment
  • Previous experience in supporting research and development projects
  • Previous experience designing or sourcing equipment for specialized industrial processes (e.g., cryogenics, high vacuum, oil and gas, pharmaceutical)
  • Ability to negotiate procurement contracts with suppliers

Essential Requirements:

  • Ability to perform activities such as typing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
