About the job

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Mechanical Engineer - TF Winding Pack

As a Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC Toroidal Field (TF) Coil System Winding Pack team, you will be a generalist on the team, closely working with product owners on all aspects of the winding pack to drive continuous improvement activities. A good partnership with our Manufacturing and Quality teams is required. Your responsibilities will include the implementation of rapid design changes and the development of design and analysis documentation, technical specifications, and assembly procedures.

What you'll do:

  • Drive continuous improvement activities with external suppliers and the internal manufacturing and quality teams
  • Drive and document change from initiation to impact analysis to implementation
  • Promptly react to emerging challenges during manufacturing, assembly, installation, and commissioning
  • Perform structural and thermal calculations, ranging in complexity from first-principle hand calculations to FEA
  • Support and develop documentation for procurement, manufacturing, and commissioning
  • Prepare reports and presentations as requested
  • Be self-motivated and exhibit excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strive for simplicity over complexity

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or another relevant field
  • At least three years of engineering experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with CAD software (NX preferred) and analysis software (ANSYS Workbench preferred)

Essential Requirements:

  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Onsite
