About the job

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Lead Manufacturing Engineer

The lead manufacturing engineer will be responsible for leading and contributing to the manufacturing process development for magnet components and assemblies to grow the production line from development to full scale production. They are responsible for developing and qualifying manufacturing techniques both in house and at external machine shops and vendors. Their areas of focus are hardware process development, work instruction authoring, nonconformance resolution, and capacity modeling.

What you'll do:

  • Lead a team of manufacturing engineers responsible for manufacturing process development
  • Organize project milestones and schedule to meet strategic targets
  • Communicate project status, risks, and resource requirements to the team & leadership
  • Own process development of the manufacturing line for HTS magnets from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production
  • Develop and qualify manufacturing techniques, processes, flow maps, and work instructions for superconducting magnet components and assemblies
  • Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Work with external vendors and suppliers to support hardware delivery per production schedules
  • Establish and execute plans for future factory expansion, including capital equipment and floor layouts
  • Implement DFM (design for manufacturability) and PFMEA (process failure mode and effects analysis) methodology and statistical process controls to set up a reliable, low defect manufacturing line
  • Influence make vs. buy decisions and work with external vendors to augment internal capabilities

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering field is required
  • 2+ years' experience as a manufacturing engineer on complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing manufacturing techniques to transition from manual to automated processes
  • Project management experience working with internal customers and external vendors to deliver manufactured hardware within specified timelines and budgets
  • Proficiency in work instruction writing, material planning, process mapping, and capacity modeling
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills

Bonus points:

  • 5+ years' experience as a manufacturing engineer on complex electro-mechanical systems
  • 2+ years’ experience leading an engineering team
  • Experience with magnets, thermo-mechanical assemblies, machining, welding, and/or VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation) is preferred
  • Experience with the application of Lean and/or Six Sigma methodologies

Essential Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as stooping, typing, standing, sitting for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
