Senior Frontend Engineer

The Role

Smile Identity, a leader in identity verification and digital Know Your Customer (KYC) solutions in Africa, is searching for a Senior Frontend Engineer with profound expertise in React. You will join a team of talented engineers, taking ownership of our frontend development, including our React + Ruby applications and SDKs that support our mission of verifying identities in real-time across Africa with proprietary Machine Learning algorithms.

This fully remote position offers the freedom to work from anywhere, complemented by opportunities for in-person collaboration at our global offices. Our diverse and distributed team spans multiple countries, time zones, and cultures, united by a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. Ideal candidates will effectively collaborate across time zones from the US Eastern Time (ET) to East Africa Time (EAT), ensuring seamless teamwork while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Responsibilities

• Assume full ownership of the frontend development, delivering high-quality, scalable, and maintainable code for our web applications and SDKs.
• Work within a team of talented engineers, contributing to admin tools that support hundreds of companies and developing web SDKs that reach millions of users worldwide.
• Transform UI/UX designs into functional, high-quality code, ensuring seamless interaction between frontend and backend components.
• Collaborate closely with backend engineers to integrate APIs and services, with a focus on optimizing performance and scalability.
• Lead the development of end-to-end tests using Playwright and unit tests with Vitest to ensure robust, error-free code.
• Drive frequent deployments with a focus on CI/CD practices, automated testing, and high code quality.
• Participate in code reviews, promoting best practices in frontend development and contributing to the continuous improvement of our development process.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of frontend development experience, specializing in React, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, enhancing collaborative efforts with backend development.
• Demonstrated ability in building and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services and libraries.
• Familiarity with modern frontend development tools and practices, including Git, CI/CD pipelines, Playwright, Vitest, and automated testing.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, distributed team environment; excellent communication skills for engaging across different time zones.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving challenges.
• A track record of deploying to production multiple times per day, taking ownership of code quality and deployment practices.
