The Role

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Development and working within the broader Corporate Development team, the Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst is responsible for: (1) the development of analyses of a broad range of strategic, economic, financial and business activities including analysis of major investment decisions such as organic development projects and/or acquisitions (capital allocation); and (2) support the identification, evaluation and follow-up of opportunities with an overall goal of acquiring or advancing high margin, high value assets that will provide growth and diversification for the Company in multiple commodities and global jurisdictions.

The Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst will actively promote, support and communicate a culture and focus on safety in all activities.

The Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst works closely with the Corporate Development team, including with the SVP Corporate Development, VP Business Development, Director, Corporate Development and Business Analysts, on numerous initiatives including investments, acquisitions, divestitures and commodity/business analysis. The incumbent works under a nominal degree of supervision, tight timelines and must develop substantial working relationships with other departments in the Company. The Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst must be able to work in multidisciplinary teams and with senior personnel in other functional areas of the Company, as well as potential partners and other stakeholders. The incumbent works closely with the Corporate Development Group on certain confidential investment decisions, and other investment initiatives, and the development of information for presentation to the Board of Directors. The Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst must possess strong numerical and writing skills in order to produce presentations to support recommendations.

Scale and scope of the investments evaluated vary depending upon the opportunities under consideration; decisions supported generally range from multi-million dollar range to >$1 billion.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Participate and support various projects such as Business Valuations, Asset Valuations and Tax Restructuring Analysis
  • Assist the SVP Corporate Development and VP Business Development in developing commercial negotiation points and tactics stemming from detailed financial evaluations, and contribute to the development and assessment of business structures related to investment opportunities
  • As part of Corporate Development team, analyze and evaluate commodity, resource and business sectors to define areas that are appropriate for Teck
  • Directly support the Copper Growth initiatives in regards to project economics, scenario analysis and strategic evaluations

The general accountability of the position requires the Junior Corporate Development Business Analyst to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Teck’s assets and projects
  • Develop the background and expertise to contribute to commodity and industry specific analysis both regionally and globally

Help coordinate and support integrated business planning at Teck:

  • perform business evaluations to identify critical value and risk drivers and assess sensitivities to critical assumptions

Support the identification and review process with respect to business opportunities in collaboration with other business units, including:

  • providing economic analyses for investment decisions, exploration investment proposals, and other investment studies on major corporate projects or acquisitions
  • providing a financial evaluation resource to all operating and corporate units of the company on as required basis
  • developing detailed, flexible financial models, by integrating and interpreting theoretical and factual databases and applying sound reasoning and analytical processes
  • drawing on expertise/resources from necessary disciplines and business units (with approval of respective supervisors/senior management) to complete comprehensive and thorough assessment of opportunities where necessary
  • combining technical information and data with financial/business data as part of the review and analysis procedure

Qualifications:

  • Significant financial modeling expertise, as well as superior word processing and presentation software skills
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with analytical methods and concepts in finance and be able to apply economic, accounting, financial and investment principles to the solution of corporate business problems
  • Strong track record of financial analysis, project evaluation and the identification of quality opportunities, particularly in a team environment
  • Ability to integrate and interpret theoretical and factual databases, the application of sound reasoning and analytical processes, the ability to develop and flex financial models, and a strong appreciation for risk analysis and risk assessment
  • A coordinated and cooperative team player with a goal to developing substantial working relationships with other departments in the Company
  • Ability to interact with multidisciplinary teams, potential partners and other stakeholders and possess strong presentation and writing skills to present interpretations and recommendations
  • A student of the industry, possess or develop the background and expertise to contribute to commodity and industry specific analysis both regionally and globally
  • Must acquire general knowledge of tax regimes, financial, business and economic conditions in countries the company is considering investing in and apply this knowledge appropriately in the evaluation of investments
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work with personnel at all levels of seniority from other functional areas across the Company and external organizations
  • A self-starter who is able to prioritize amongst multiple projects at once and work with limited guidance
  • A high degree of critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills as well as strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Foreign language skills (particularly Spanish) would be an asset
  • Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills
  • A Graduate from a post-secondary program in Business Administration, Engineering or Geology
  • A financial designation, e.g., Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Chartered Accountant (CA)
  • Previous work experience in an analyst role would be considered an asset
