Senior Software Engineer (Backend), Engine

The role

You will work in a small engineering team and own infrastructure that powers tens of thousands of decentralized applications built with thirdweb. You will make key decisions on product, architecture, developer experience, and implementation of technologies that handle high-scale blockchain transactions, decentralized storage, blockchain nodes, and blockchain analytics pipeline.

The Engine team is building thirdweb Engine, a powerful backend server for apps to reliably interact with blockchain contracts and data at scale.

What a typical week might look like

• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs with a strong focus on scalability, performance, and reliability.
• Build and improve distributed systems that interface with blockchain technologies and other modern infrastructures.
• Build and evolve critical infrastructure for thirdweb, including thirdweb Engine and decentralized storage.
• Extract learnings from customer research and feedback to improve our product and internal processes.
• Outside-the-box critical thinking in solution designs to push the limit of decentralization without compromising user experiences.
• Lead projects to achieve high operational excellence and availability for backend services.
• Research latest advancements in the web3 industry including vendors, competitors, trends, and specifications.

What we're looking for

• 4+ years of experience designing, building, and scaling production-grade backend systems
• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure and tools (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, or similar)
• High passion and/or experience with blockchain development and technologies (wallets, contracts, dApps).
• Excitement to work in a fast-paced, unstructured environment that prioritizes delivering impact and learning.
• Experience in Typescript, Python, Go or Rust.
• Passion about learning and pushing the boundaries of decentralized technologies.

Bonus Points

• Experience in developer-first products (SDKs, API design, technical documentation)
• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation
