Lead Developer

We’re Amalgam, a tech platform supporting the Founders, CFOs, Investors, and Accountants of fast-growing startups. We grew out of Calculate, a team of Finance and Accounting advisors that engages with that same high-growth market of growing companies. Following the success of our software as an internal tool, we’ve found success selling to other nerds like us and have spun out into our own standalone software business.
 
As our business continues to grow, we’re looking for a Lead Developer to upgrade our expertise, focus our technical vision, and help us better prioritize and make decisions.

This role will be primarily focused on technical leadership rather than personnel management, but the ideal candidate has an appetite for exposure to a range of business and strategic functions. This is a foundational hire for our team, and we’re looking for someone with the creativity and drive to help steer our business.

*What You’ll Do  *

• Work with our founder to plan, prioritize, and implement new product features based on technical needs and business opportunities
• Act as a primary resource when tricky or complex implementation questions arise. You’ll be the go-to contributor for challenging problems
• Help refine existing solutions for better efficiency, stability, and scalability
• Provide mentorship and support for junior members of the dev team. This is not a role focused on managing personnel, but we hope you’ll take an interest in the growth of our dev team as a whole
• Develop product mastery, and coordinate with user-facing and sales teams to devise new features and support business questions
• Help guide our business as it grows. You will be part of our leadership team, with input into the personnel, strategy, and (crucially) culture of our team as it continues to grow!   What You’ve Got 
• 5+ years of experience in full-stack or back-end development roles
• Python, JS, and AWS experience required
• Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical team members
• Flexible, creative thinker, with the ability to quickly learn and solve problems
• Confidence to make decisions with imperfect information. Mistakes are better than inaction, we don’t waste time assigning blame or criticizing
• Ability to self-manage and prioritize dynamically as objectives and priorities evolve

Nice to Haves

• Experience working with React and Flask frameworks
• We support finance users, so some Excel familiarity is a plus

Company History & Product
Amalgam is a platform allowing users to transfer large amounts of data to and from online tools, using spreadsheets as a medium. We give spreadsheet users full CRUD functionality for external tools/resources without leaving their excel or google spreadsheet doc. We can turn any excel user into a developer for personalized, mini web-apps.

The applications of this tool are broad, but we’re starting with what we know best - enablement of finance and accounting for startups. We learned while a part of Calculate (a Finance and Accounting consulting business for startups) that the Startup world is heavily built on interconnected apps (QuickBooks, Stripe, Shopify, etc.), with few good ways of accessing this data. In other words, TONS of data entry. We can eliminate this almost completely!

Because this tool was built initially while a part of the Calculate team, it’s perfectly tuned for other Accounting and Finance users. Our target market is other firms like Calculate, small but not too small, and focused on fast-growing businesses that like doing things efficiently without sacrificing quality.
