Alain: I used to run an accelerator in Montreal, Canada. The problem became evident when I experienced it firsthand and couldn't find an existing solution. So, I decided to build it myself.
Amit: What sparked the need for tools and templates in the startup ecosystem?
Alain: Startups, especially as they scale up, often encounter the need for tools and templates to streamline their operations. Whether it's automating processes, managing finances, or facilitating reporting for scaling up operations, the demand arises from the need for efficiency and scalability.
Amit: What distinguishes your product from existing solutions in the market?
Alain: Our product offers two main functionalities: an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and a portfolio management tool. The ATS streamlines the candidate selection process with full automation, customizable funnels, evaluation forms, and email communication. The portfolio management aspect aggregates data from the selection process to provide valuable insights for startup coaching and support.
Amit: Was being a founder and starting a software company always your goal?
Alain: Yes, I've always been passionate about web products and SaaS. Having previously founded companies in related industries, and working closely with startups in an accelerator, I felt compelled to address the problems I encountered first hand rather than just offering advice.

Amit: Why did you choose to bootstrap your company instead of seeking external funding?
Alain: Bootstrapping initially seemed more feasible given my financial stability and the early traction from sales. While raising funds was considered, I realized that focusing on sales would yield similar outcomes without the time investment and uncertainty associated with fundraising.
Amit: What are some pros and cons of bootstrapping as opposed to raising funds?
Alain: Bootstrapping requires tighter budgeting and cash flow management, but it fosters resourcefulness and independence. It also necessitates strategic hiring and planning for seasonal fluctuations in revenue. While external funding offers financial cushioning, bootstrapping allows greater control over the company's direction and decision-making.
Amit: How did you approach hiring for your bootstrap company, considering limited resources and the need for diverse skill sets?
Alain: We leveraged platforms like Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent) to reach a broad pool of candidates with diverse skills and locations, maximizing the match for affinity with the business and required skill sets. We prioritized real feedback and open discussions within the team, fostering a collaborative and empowering work environment that attracted talent and minimized churn.
Amit: What strategies did you employ to stand out and attract talent, considering the challenges of being an early-stage company?
Alain: We emphasized our flat organizational structure, encouraging open discussions and a collaborative atmosphere. By leveraging our own applicant tracking system, we streamlined the hiring process and focused on finding the right cultural fit and competence level. Our commitment to employee satisfaction and zero churn over the past two and a half years has further reinforced our attractiveness to prospective hires.
