The role of startups in the race to net-zero

Bad for your wallet, good for the planet

What if rising gas prices had a silver lining?

According to economists, the most efficient way to reduce fossil fuel consumption is to raise the price of gas. A 43% price increase could cut gas consumption by 16%, preventing 175 million tons of CO2 from contaminating our atmosphere.

The growing impact of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions has capital pouring into the renewable energy sector. By 2030, the industry is expected to grow to $1.9T as every aspect of the energy supply chain gets reimagined.

Zero-emission fuel companies, green electricity providers, solar energy services, wind turbine distributors, and electric vehicle charging companies are just a few examples of businesses stepping up to combat reliance on fossil fuels.

Race to zero

As the number of climate tech unicorns continues to grow, it’s predicted that the next billion-dollar start-ups will be in climate tech. They’re expected to play a huge part in flattening the trajectory of pollution emissions in the hopes of getting the world back on track towards 1.5°C.

With the right funding, fossil fuels could be pushed out of the energy supply chain by 2035. Thousands of companies, cities, educational and financial institutions have joined the Race to Zero, a pledge to take action to reduce global emissions by the end of the decade.

Strides in sustainability

Across industries, companies are more focused than ever on implementing new measures to help achieve net-zero.

Apple, Dell, and Microsoft are among the Big Tech companies working toward carbon neutrality. Samsung is reducing its energy consumption and recycling 95% of its manufacturing waste.

A “de-carbonized economy” could save the U.S. $14T while adding another $3T to GDP. That presents a significant opportunity for new players in the sustainability space.

Renewable energy is on the rise

Global investment in the energy sector hit a record $755B in 2021, with renewables leading the way. Sustainable energy sources like wind, solar, and battery technologies that emit little to no greenhouse gases have made massive strides in recent years, and recent global events are only helping to advance the argument against oil.

Fossil fuels still provide about 80% of the world’s energy, hampering efforts to eliminate carbon emissions and move to more environmentally sustainable economies. The good news is, demand for renewable energy is on the rise and is set to account for 95% of the net increase in global power capacity by 2025.)

How tech is saving the sea

The world is in the midst of an “ocean emergency" and the United Nations is urging countries to do more to restore ocean health. Rising sea levels, ocean temperature, and greenhouse gas concentration reached record levels last year. With millions of tons of plastic getting dumped into the ocean each year, plastic could outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050.

The ocean could be the key to addressing many of the world’s most pressing challenges, pushing innovators to implement new and emerging technologies in an effort to protect our oceans and their ecosystems.

Founded in 2019 by the original creator of Apache Superset, Max Beauchemin (CEO), Preset is a fully managed open-source analytics platform that enables companies to explore and visualize their data to make smarter and faster business decisions.

Like many startups, Preset struggled to source the right candidates. After trying multiple platforms with no luck, the company discovered AngelList Talent’s Curated product in 2020. As part of Preset’s Curated subscription, the company was assigned a dedicated account manager who worked closely with their Recruiting Team to understand their hiring needs and provided weekly lists of personalized, interview-ready candidates.

With Curated, Preset started connecting with the right talent, matching with highly qualified and startup-ready candidates who possessed the exact experience and skills the company was looking for—leading to an impressive 4 hires in 5 months.
