Museum built 4 new buildings while I was a member. Became the #3 rated museum in the United States according to Trip Advisor. I was part of the marketing committee. Museum... more expanded reach on social media, and in traditional media during my term. Term ended in June of 2016. It is a special place in America that everyone should visit. I was angel #1, hired second executive director and helped build the organization from nothing to 110 members. Recruited initial members, found deal flow. Built the HPA... more brand in the community. I am the only co-founder that has invested in more than one deal (only one other co-founder invested in one deal and the others haven't invested in any). and consistently been a part of the organization. Board term ended in 2015. HPA is one of the most active angel organizations in the United States.

I was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and chaired... more several other committees. Chairing committees at that time were operational positions. The board was elected by peers from the trading floor. During the time I was on the board, CME transitioned from a non-profit member run organization to a for profit publicly traded organization. Was also a member of CME/PAC.

What's the most useful business-related book you've ever read?
Competitive Strategy, Michael Porter; Venture Deals, Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson
What's your favorite non-business book?
Anything by Hemingway
If money were not an issue, what would you be doing right now?
Investing in, and working with startups. Spending my entire summer in Grand Marais, MN. I really enjoy connecting people and helping people. I probably should have been a basketball coach.
What words of advice would you give your younger self?
Go to California. Don't worry about the money. Just go.
What's the most creative thing you've ever done?
Changing the course of CME was incredibly time consuming and creative. It paved the way to put structure and recruit people for Hyde Park Angels. Moving to the city when my kids were in grade school also changed the course of my life.
Which founders or startups do you most admire?
Ones with GRIT. Jay Swoboda, Sam Rosen have incredible grit. They won't let their idea die. I love the way Sue Khim runs her company. There isn't a founder that I have worked with that I wouldn't want to have a relationship with.
What's your super power?
ability to take disparate pieces of information that are unrelated and put them into a meaningful whole. Cross-pollinating ideas. Helps with strategy. I also remember lots of stuff from the past that helps with analysis and strategy later.

What words of wisdom do you live by?
On the floor we lived by the code, "your word is your bond". Same as "We will not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate among us any who do." If I say it, I mean it. Try to be transparent, and honest.
What aspects of your work are you most passionate about?
Helping people. Making connections.
What was the most impactful class you took in school?
Undergrad: Business Organization. Grad: Microeconomics
What's something you wish you had done years earlier?
Went to California in 1984 and become an entrepreneur
What's an obstacle you've overcome?
Too many to list. So many people have told me in my life I couldn't do stuff. You can't play basketball, you're too slow. (Got a free ride to USAFA and was recruited by many) You will fail as a trader. I made it. You can't be a VC. Still working on
