Software Engineering Intern 2019 (2 months)
I was tasked with integrating Bing Rewards into Microsoft Edge (new Chromium fork).

I ended up turning this into a hybrid SWE/PM internship and designed several new... more features with mockups in Figma. 4 of 5 made it into the browser today (e.g. vertical tabs, coupons, several less-annoying Bing rewards integrations, I suggested split screen but didn't make a mockup). I had sent out surveys through the org of which features would delight users, which would be good for Microsoft but bad for users, etc. People thought I was a full-time PM ?.

Hardware Engineering Intern 2019 (5 months)
I was one of 14 total Hardware Engineering Interns. Worked on the Pixel 4XL smartphone team on the System Integration hardware engineering team. This team is responsible for... more collecting all the schematics for the various PCBs for the phone and designing the overall phone.

I spent most of my effort working on the USB port and camera.

For USB, I ran several tests with signal analyzers and suggested swapping out a capacitor component which improved USB 3 signal throughput. I also designed a custom PCB that would plug into the device and emulate moisture via a firmware-controlled variable resistor. I could also mux power (including full 100W USB C Power Delivery) from one input with full USB 3 5Gbps data from another input. The precursor board had a limitation that it could only support 60W power delivery, and the moisture control was not fully programmable. I wrote most of the firmware for this board, but didn't finish before the co-op ended.

For the camera, I wrote a set of custom Bash and Python scripts to flash a new firmware onto the phone and automatically run a series of tests to measure power draw on the phone and make sure that camera circuits and the laser dot projector for face unlock safely turned off with any power faults.

Firmware Engineering Intern 2017 (2 months)
I wrote firmware for the SSD group. Specifically, I added a new feature to allow the ARM microcontroller on the SSD to send messages via a separate sideband channel. I implemented... more the API following the ASIC documentation. I actually finished early in 7 weeks. Then I realized as I was testing that in order to send full-word messages, the process would have to use the IRQ high-priority interrupt queue, which would massively degrade SSD performance (the ASIC only supported bit-banging rather than a shift register to send out a full message). So I spent the last couple weeks working with the ASIC designers to give them the new requirements for the next iteration of the chip. They thought I was a full-timer ?.
