    A Preliminary American-Iranian Trust-building Initiative
Designer, co-convener, diplomat · After years of trust-building efforts with Javad Zarif (then UN Mission head), my Iranian colleague and I at the… · More Foundation for Religious Diplomacy arranged a formal meeting in NYC with President Ahmadinejad during which he answered questions from a group of a hundred American thought leaders and students from several universities. Every person attending had a chance to candidly speak with President Ahmadinejad. A scholar who was of the Baha'i faith (illegal in Iran) directly asked the President why the Baha'is were persecuted in Iran. He responded that they were a rebellious political movement, not a religion. She responded in perfect Farsi that she was a Baha'i and that they had no political agenda other than the freedom to practice. She asked him to tell his cabinet that truth. He responded by smiling meekly and saying nothing. Afterward she was moved to tears, saying, "I am so grateful today to have had the chance to do something that no Baha'i has ever been able to do and walk away safely: to tell the President of Iran the truth and leave him speechless as a result."

A year later I went to Iran to engage in a conversations with Iranian religious and scholarly leaders about the way trust could be developed even though honest discussions of divergent goals, beliefs and policies. I have a standing invitation to return to continue to pragmatically find ways to work together in the face of some irreconcilable differences.
