- During this time at JPmorgan, my Responsibilities, deliverables and ongoing projects include, but aren’t limited to lots of things, just ask me. Language Design, Distributed... more Systems, Data Anonymization (and “data science” tooling generally), etc. Applications and customers of work products span the Corporate Investment Bank, and some of the work has also resulted in external research talks.
- Technology/engineering/mentoring concerns aside (which are fun!), a huge portion of my work at JP Morgan has required me to learn entire areas of the business (spanning Markets and Corporate banking) so that I could effectively work with applicable business/product stakeholders to understand their problems, needs and goals iteratively work with those same stakeholders to transform their needs into well posed engineering efforts with understandable deliverables
- Educate those same product/business partners on the quality/completeness tradeoffs achievable on various time scales for their needs.
- Principal/tech/engineering lead for several generations of ownership and authorization aware programming language and replicated fault-tolerant database system.
- Several generations of increasingly rich programming languages for modeling any nontrivial resource/authorization protocol. Designed to support optimizing compilation and formal methods. Which has required the mixture of a lot of interesting new ideas. (Some key words include:
Linear Logic, Dependent Types, Symmetric Monoidal Categories, compiler engineering, DataLog, formal methods, etc)
- Various replication protocols and various techniques (especially coinductive modelling) to make their engineering tractable. Early stuff was raft flavored, newer stuff is more like generalized paxos with some causal ordering hooks plus federated pki trust root hooks.
- This project is intended to be the end state platform/architecture and tools for several product efforts (publicly called IIN) which has ≈100 global banks onboarded at present (as of February 2020) and commitments from another ≈300 more that are to be onboarded of the course of the next two years (through 2022 C.E.)
- If you ever hear me say “blockchain”, i actually mean this set of efforts. Even though I’ve been involved trying to fight the tire fires that have been the bank wide “blockchain” efforts since their inception.
- Patented work For supporting an internal kaggle-like platform, I devised a family of algorithms for doing machine learning prediction preserving data obfuscation where the underlying security properties derive from the learning with errors cryptography problem. The work was motivated by the simple observation: “wouldn’t sharing strongly encrypted but ML friendly data be way simpler than building a weird bespoke dockerization platform for competition participants?”
- Also involved in team mentoring and recruiting efforts, plus staff learning.
- Providing code review / design feedback to other developers
- Built a type safe in-memory relational column store to simplify aggregation, query and deploy engineering complexity for olap API applications that only need ephemeral storage.
- A data set anonymization service that transforms an input dataset into a result that has the same schema and statistical structure, but lacks any direct or statistically deducible Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Has some neat tricks to support arbitrary conditional DAG models, allowing conditioning a variable on either discrete or continuous variables while ensuring conditional distributions of PII are properly anonymized. Used to power “dev environment” api instances for new API services without using production data.
- For several JPM investment decisions in fintech startups/tech vendors ($1-10MM investment decisions), I’ve been the primary technical due diligence person for the firm.
