As a global platform, Airbnb is faced with constant and evolving fraud attacks. Data plays a critical role in understanding novel fraud patterns, identifying the most optimal defenses that minimize impact to our good users, and ensuring that our models are accurate and can iterate quickly with the ever changing fraud landscape.
As part of the Trust Data Foundations team, you will be in charge of leading a team of data engineers and defining the vision to scale data driven decisions to support detection and mitigation across all fraud verticals across our product. You will collaborate closely with product, data science, analytics, and operations teams to understand the Trust product, and establish the data strategy that supports the data needs across our platform to make Airbnb the most safe and trusted community. There are still many unsolved problems to tackle in both online and offline risk, and we are looking for talented engineering managers to solve these challenges with us.
The Difference You Will Make:
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead Trust’s data engineering team. They will be accountable for:
- Defining and executing on the technical direction and vision for the team to serve the data needs across Trust defenses and products
- Raising the quality bar for the data assets owned by the team
- Identifying strategic areas to uplevel data accessibility for various Trust x-functional stakeholders
- Collaborating with and influencing the data community across Airbnb to uplevel data engineering practices and processes
- Proactively collaborating with engineering, product, and operations to identify customer pain points
In addition to the core responsibilities, you will be responsible for:
- Providing guidance on technical direction and foundational investments that are expected to uplevel accuracy and efficiency of data-driven decisions across Trust
- Optimizing team operations to empower the team to achieve a high level of productivity, reliability, and simplicity (planning, prioritization, knowledge sharing, design review, incident response, etc.)
- Hiring and developing talents on your team
- Championing Airbnb’s culture of belonging
A Typical Day:
- Support the team to deliver data assets (batch, near real-time, streaming) across Airbnb’s data warehouses (Hive, Presto, StarRocks, Flink, etc.) with high quality
- Influence the technical direction of the projects to meet the data stakeholders needs while upholding quality. Quickly validate project ideas through iterative development, and pivot as necessary.
- Streamline the team’s practices and processes to optimize the ways of working, both internally and with external teams
- Showcase the team’s work in front of senior leaders, clearly communicate trade-offs, risks, and opportunities to a broad set of stakeholders
- Proactively share context with the team, and help the team connect the dots of their work with broader company and organizational initiatives
- Be able to answer questions about ongoing initiatives, architecture and systems, staffing situations, and priorities in details
- Have regular 1:1s and meaningful career conversations with your reports
- Have the technical acumen to partner with tech leads and are comfortable helping drive data incident resolution and deliver continuous improvement to team’s foundational goals
- Lead or contribute the efforts that help increase belonging on the team and beyond
Your Expertise:
- 5+ years of engineering management experience, with 9+ years of of relevant software development industry experience in a fast paced tech environment
- Flexible in leadership style, can adapt to a variety of ways of working depends on the situation
- Experience working on user facing product surfaces, especially in search related product areas
- Strong product and design sense, can spot potential usability issues, provide alternative solutions and collaborate effectively with product, design and user research partners
- Strong communication skill and ability to influence decisions from a wide variety of stakeholders
- Technical leadership: expertise in fullstack development and experience leading cross platform team(s), bonus if experienced in performance optimization / latency
- Experience fostering an inclusive and engaging team environment
- Able to identify, retain, grow and acquire critical talent

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
