The Role

⛹️ About the role

  • We're looking for a talented engineer to join Hardfin and help expand our platform. Our vision includes many technically challenging systems and data problems, some of which are features that are already spec'd and some that are yet to be developed.
  • You'll partner with the co-founders (CEO and CTO) and early team to execute a plan that will get us there. We're fast and scrappy, so not opposed to shortcuts that help us launch and iterate quality products quickly. You will be involved in shaping our technical direction from the start. This includes the difficult tradeoffs of what has to be built "right" today, what could be rebuilt next year, and what needs to wait entirely. You'll set the tone for all of Hardfin's future technical talent.

We are hiring for this role in Illinois, California, and Colorado. Currently seeking candidates based in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver metro areas. We are building a distributed team, meaning a mostly-remote culture with offices distributed in certain key cities.

Other locations will not be considered and applications will be respectfully declined. This role is US only—international applications will be deleted.

🏢 About the company

Hardfin is a B2B software platform for equipment manufacturers (e.g., agriculture, construction, robotics, 3D printing) that enables them to offer ongoing subscriptions for their hardware. Our HaaS operations platform allows equipment manufacturers to offer hardware-as-a-service (HaaS) subscriptions—track assets, upsell services, manage recurring billing, automate lease accounting, integrate customer data for usage-based models, and fund COGS with bank partners.

The hardware industry is massive and behind the software curve on subscriptions (i.e., HaaS) because it's harder to implement for hardware than pure software. There are many factors to consider (systems, data, sales, finance) for businesses that are focused on building great hardware. Longstanding companies have captive financing subsidiaries to manage leasing (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere), and a few younger companies have hacked together in-house subscription solutions with enterprise software—but no one has cracked the code to make it seamless.

Hardfin cracks the code. We solve the complex system and data problems for our customers and enable smooth subscriptions for all teams (sales, operations, engineering, finance). Our platform unlocks new capabilities for the equipment industry to transition to modern business models.

Our founders are Zachary Kimball and Danny Hermes.

  • Zack was most recently a startup business leader in data & analytics at Skupos, where he helped grow the B2B software platform. Zack’s background is in payments, venture finance, and mortgage finance. He's a former McKinsey consultant and Harvard Law School alum. Early in his career, he was a freelance payments and database developer.
  • Danny cut his teeth early in his career at Google, working on developer experiences for Google Cloud Platform. As a Staff Engineer at Blend, a leading fintech company automating mortgage finance, he focused on scaling the infrastructure as Blend grew rapidly in the years leading up to IPO. He deeply values high quality communication in software engineering. He grew up a farm kid in northwest Illinois and holds a PhD in Mathematics from UC Berkeley.

💪 What you bring to the table

From your professional career, you have:

  • Experience developing new software products from scratch (ability to write understandable, maintainable, testable code)
  • Hands-on full-stack exposure (skilled from back-end development and containerization to front-end development and design)
  • Strong opinions and intuition about the best approach (have instincts on the right path, but not ideologically tied to specific technologies)
  • Natural curiosity and eagerness to learn new things quickly (comfortable picking up new stacks and choosing the right tool to get the job done)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (care about documenting our knowledge and processes so the team can learn and the company can scale)
  • Customer empathy and understanding (want to know customer pain points and the best way to solve them with or without tech)
  • Product vision and intuition (ability to connect the dots on how customer needs tie to product and technical solutions)

In a perfect world, you have experience:

  • Building fintech products (integrating payments platforms such as Stripe)
  • Integrating CRMs (connecting to platforms such as Salesforce)
  • Integrating ERPs (connecting to platforms such as NetSuite)

  • >> Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? Apply anyway!
